Rochester NY (SPX) Mar 30, 2010 - Space weather storms will make living on Mars challenging. The first group of colonists won't need umbrellas; they will need safe houses with 30-foot thick walls made of Martian clay that can withstand radiation storms.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 29, 2010 - This view results from the first observation of a target selected autonomously by a spacecraft on Mars. During the 2,172nd Martian day, or sol, of its mission on Mars (March 4, 2010), NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity used newly developed and uploaded software to choose a target from a wider-angle image and point its panoramic camera (Pancam) to observe the chosen target through 13 different filters.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 29, 2010 - This image shows NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity perched on the edge of Concepcion crater in Meridiani Planum, Mars. The image was acquired by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on February 13, 2010, during the 2,153rd Martian day, or sol, of Opportunity's mission on Mars.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 29, 2010 - NASA's Mars Exploration Rover used its panoramic camera to record this view of the rim of a crater about 65 kilometers (40 miles) in the distance, on the southwestern horizon. This crater, Bopolu, is about 19 kilometers (12 miles) in diameter.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 26, 2010 - Weird coatings on rocks beside a young Martian crater remain puzzling after a preliminary look at data from examination of the site by NASA's Opportunity rover.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 26, 2010 - In position for the fourth winter, embedded at Troy on the west side of Home Plate, Spirit continues to execute a single seven-sol plan each week, as long as power permits.
Noordwijk, Netherlands (ESA) Mar 24, 2010 - A crew of six, including two Europeans, will soon begin a simulated mission to Mars in a mockup that includes an interplanetary spaceship, Mars lander and martian landscape. The Mars500 experiment, as long as a real journey to Mars, is the ultimate test of human endurance.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 24, 2010 - NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity, now in its seventh year on Mars, has a new capability to make its own choices about whether to make additional observations of rocks that it spots on arrival at a new location.
Noordwijk, Netherlands (AFP) March 22, 2010 - Four Europeans vying to become guinea pigs for a 500-day simulated mission to Mars said Monday they were proud to be putting their young lives on hold for the sake of scientific advancement.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 22, 2010 - In her winter position, still embedded in the area called Troy on the west side of Home Plate, Spirit has transitioned to executing a single, seven-sol plan each week, as long as power permits.
Paris, France (SPX) Mar 16, 2010 - Images from the recent flyby of Phobos, taken on 7 March 2010 by the German Aerospace Center-operated (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board Mars Express, are being released today. The images show Mars's rocky moon in exquisite detail, with a resolution of 4.4 metres per pixel, including the proposed landing sites for the forthcoming Phobos-Grunt mission.
Leicester UK (SPX) Mar 15, 2010 - Space physicists from the University of Leicester are part of an international team that has identified the impact of the Sun on Mars' atmosphere. Writing in the AGU journal Geophysics Research Letters, the scientists report that Mars is constantly losing part of its atmosphere to space.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 12, 2010 - Opportunity has finished its circumnavigation campaign around Concepcion crater. Numerous targeted images were taken of rocks around the crater but no new rock targets were chosen to be analyzed using the in-situ (contact) instruments of the rover's robotic arm (IDD).
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Mar 10, 2010 - Russia's Institute of Medical and Biological Problems announced on Thursday the names of 11 volunteers on the shortlist to take part in a 520-day simulation of an expedition to Mars, a spokesman said.
Koln, Germany (SPX) Mar 08, 2010 - Mars Express encountered Phobos last night, smoothly skimming past at just 67 km, the closest any manmade object has ever approached Mars' enigmatic moon. The data collected could help unlock the origin of not just Phobos but other 'second generation' moons.
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Mar 08, 2010 - Flowing lava can carve or build paths very much like the riverbeds and canyons etched by water, and this probably explains at least one of the meandering channels on the surface of Mars. These results were presented on March 4, 2010 at the 41st Lunar and Planetary Science Conference by Jacob Bleacher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.
