A consortium of Spain's Iberdrola, Britain's Scottish and Southern Energy and France's GDF Suez on Wednesday dropped a bid for land set aside in Britain for the construction of three nuclear plants.

"For technical, economic and financial reasons the companies decided today not to present new offers in the auction," they said in a statement.

"The consortium is now examining the opportunities offered by other potential sites" in Britain.

The British government announced this month it had selected 11 sites that would house a new generation of nuclear power stations.
