Denver CO (SPX) Jan 10, 2005 - Even as the Spirit and Opportunity rovers complete a year of successful operation on Mars, the next major step in Mars Exploration is taking shape with preparation of NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for launch in just seven months.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 06, 2005 - Opportunity is healthy and has reached the site where its heat shield hit the ground. The rover will make detailed observations of the heat shield's remains, weather permitting.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 05, 2005 - A year after Spirit and Opportunity made their dramatic arrivals on Mars, the man who led the landing team looks back on a job well done.
Washington (AFP) Jan 05, 2005 - One year after they landed on Mars and confirmed that water once flowed on the red planet, the US robot probes Spirit and Opportunity continue their relentless exploration for the origins of life, far surpassing their three-month mission expectancy.
Pasadena (SPX) Jan 03, 2005 - NASA lit a birthday candle today for its twin Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. The Spirit rover begins its second year on Mars investigating puzzling rocks unlike any found earlier.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 23, 2004 - After six fruitful months exploring the interior of Endurance Crater, the Opportunity rover has successfully climbed out of the crater onto the surrounding flatland of Meridiani Planum. Once out, the rover examined some of its own tracks that it had laid down prior to entering the crater.
Paris (ESA) Dec 23, 2004 - These images, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, show Candor Chasma - one of the largest canyons in the Valles Marineris canyon system.
Ithaca NY (SPX) Dec 22, 2004 - Four Cornell University space scientists are on five of the eight teams that will begin planning the science program for NASA's next Mars rover mission, the mobile Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), scheduled for launch in 2009.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 17, 2004 - Scientists have identified a water-signature mineral called goethite in bedrock that the NASA's Mars rover Spirit examined in the Columbia Hills, one of the mission's surest indicators yet for a wet history on Spirit's side of Mars.
Bloomington IN (SPX) Dec 16, 2004 - Two of the eight instruments selected to go on a Mars rover have Indiana University Bloomington geologists behind them, NASA announced yesterday.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 15, 2004 - Spirit drove five of the last seven days, continuing its trek towards the top of Husband Hill. Spirit's intermediate goal is a ridge dubbed Larry's Lookout, which is roughly 75 meters (246 feet) away.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 15, 2004 - NASA has selected eight proposals to provide instrumentation and associated science investigations for the mobile Mars Science Laboratory rover, scheduled for launch in 2009.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 15, 2004 - Opportunity has finished its work inside Endurance Crater and climbed out. Before leaving, the rover examined a transition point between dark and light rock layers about 20 meters (about 66 feet) from the rim of the crater.
Moffet Field CA (SPX) Dec 13, 2004 - On January 25, Opportunity landed on Mars. The landing site, Meridiani Planum, was the flattest location scouted in the history of Mars exploration.
Pasadena (JPL) Dec 13, 2004 - Scientists have identified a water-signature mineral called goethite in bedrock that the NASA's Mars rover Spirit examined in the Columbia Hills, one of the mission's surest indicators yet for a wet history on Spirit's side of Mars.
Washington DC (UPI) Dec 9, 2004 - Atmospheric scientists may continue to disagree about whether Earth's climate is warming and what it means, but the community of planetary scientists has formed a strong consensus - and quickly - that liquid water once flowed on Mars.
