Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 25, 2005 - Opportunity is healthy and has been making excellent progress around Erebus Crater. At the beginning of the week, the rover was in automode as it was still recovering from a partial uplink, but on sol 614 the team sent a real-time activate command and the rover performed remote sensing.
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 21, 2005 - Dr. Dean Eppler is a geologist at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. For the past eight years, Eppler has participated in field tests of experimental spacesuits as part of the Desert RATS (Research and Technology Studies) project.
When it comes to longevity, the Spirit and Opportunity rovers on Mars are giving some real competition to the pink bunny from those battery advertisements.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 19, 2005 - It's been ten days of high drama on the Spirit side of the planet. As we were completing the Everest pan, we decided that the one thing we still had to do before leaving the summit was some IDD work on Hillary.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 19, 2005 - Spirit is healthy and spent the week examining a rock called Hillary at the true summit of Husband Hill. The first attempt to approach Hillary ended with a small pebble under Spirit's left front wheel, and the stability of the rover was uncertain.
Cambridge MA (SPX) Oct 19, 2005 - Look east late these evenings and you'll see a big, fiery yellow star shining much brighter than any other. This is the planet Mars, and it's passing unusually close to Earth during late October and early November 2005.
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 18, 2005 - Just ask any geologist. If you're studying the history of a planet and the life forms that may have lived on it, the really good places to look are rugged terrains like canyons and other areas where water, igneous activity, wind, and seismic rumblings have left their respective marks. Flat is not so good.
Providence RI (SPX) Oct 18, 2005 - New high-resolution images of mid-latitude Mars are revealing glacier-formed landscapes far from the Martian poles, says a leading Mars researcher.
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Oct 18, 2005 - NASA scientists have discovered additional evidence that Mars once underwent plate tectonics, slow movement of the planet's crust, like the present-day Earth. A new map of Mars' magnetic field made by the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft reveals a world whose history was shaped by great crustal plates being pulled apart or smashed together.
Tuscon AZ (SPX) Oct 18, 2005 - Remote-sensing orbiters, probes, landers and rovers are returning astonishing discoveries about our solar system. But some of the most exciting geological and potentially astrobiological places in our family of planets and moons are dangerous and difficult to explore.
Tempe AZ (SPX) Oct 17, 2005 - A new web site at Arizona State University provides the public and scientists live views of Mars. A scrolling panel that runs continually shows visual and infrared images of Mars as they are received from the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) instrument on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter spacecraft.
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 14, 2005 - Last month, the Desert RATS (Research and Technology Studies) team spent two weeks roaming about on a cattle field near Flagstaff, Arizona. Their objective: test out advanced technology - space suits, an automated rover, communications equipment - that may be used some day on human missions to the moon and Mars.
Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 12, 2005 - Opportunity is healthy and traveling westward around Erebus Crater. The rover is running in restricted sols, so the team is able to drive it only every other sol and has been doing so. On sol 601, Opportunity drove 34 meters (112 feet).
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 11, 2005 - Early in September, several dozen scientists and engineers converged on a cattle ranch in the high desert near Flagstaff, Arizona. They were there to participate in the eighth annual Desert RATS (Research and Technology Studies) field season. This year's research focused on the interaction between SCOUT, a testbed for exploring rover technologies, and two astronauts wearing different experimental spacesuits.
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 09, 2005 - Spirit is healthy and still performing science in the summit area of Husband Hill. The rover has acquired a 360-degree panorama from the top of Husband Hill, and has performed remote sensing of other targets of interest. Spirit drove back down to the clean face of the rock outcrop called Hillary to find a good position to perform work with the robotic arm.
Mount Pleasant MI (SPX) Oct 07, 2005 - Microscopic life in lakes of southwestern Australia may provide keys to unlocking the secrets of past environments and the possibility of life on Mars.
