Editorial Team

The Mars Daily Editorial Team produces Mars Daily's coverage of Mars exploration and science. We report on rovers and orbiters, sample-return and human-Mars planning, and the geology, atmosphere and astrobiology of the Red Planet. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Mars Daily takes editorial responsibility for content under this byline. For more on how we work, see our editorial policy.

NASA Scientists And Teachers To Study Mars In The Mojave Desert

Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 21, 2007 - A passionate teacher can make any subject come alive for students, and NASA is helping to fuel that passion. On March 25-30, 2007, NASA's Spaceward Bound project at the agency's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., will take a team of NASA scientists and 40 teachers from throughout the country to study the unique geologic formations of California's Mojave Desert and the supremely adapted microbes that call it home.

Mars Express Radar Gauges Water Quantity Around Martian South Pole

Paris, France (ESA) Mar 16, 2007 - The amount of water trapped in frozen layers over Mars' south polar region is equivalent to a liquid layer about 11 metres deep covering the planet. This new estimate comes from mapping the thickness of the dusty ice by the Mars Express radar instrument that has made more than 300 virtual slices through layered deposits covering the pole. The radar sees through icy layers to the lower boundary, which in places is as deep as 3.7 kilometres below the surface.

Early Mars Had Underground Water System

Paris (AFP) March 07, 2007 - Scientists on Thursday said they had found evidence that Mars was once latticed by an underground water system, proving that the Red Planet has had a long and complex relationship with one of the potential ingredients for life. Writing in the British journal Nature, researchers focussed on questions thrown up by NASA's Martian rover, Opportunity, in its exploration of a vast sloping plain called Meridiani Planum.

Spirit Continues Driving While Engineers Check Robotic Arm

Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 26, 2007 - Spirit is healthy and making progress on the return trek to Home Plate. Rover handlers have put use of the robotic arm on hold in order to run diagnostic tests of apparent positioning errors in the placement of instruments on the arm. Meanwhile, Spirit continues driving, searching for dust devils and clouds using WATCH computer commands, and acquiring other remote sensing data.

APL-Built Mineral Mapper Uncovering Clues Of Martian Surface Composition

Laurel MD (SPX) Feb 21, 2007 - Reaching its first 100 days of operations, the powerful mineral-detector aboard the newest satellite to circle Mars is changing the way scientists view the history of water on the red planet. The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), designed and built by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md., has teamed with the five other cameras and sensors aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) to provide new clues about where water could have existed on or near the Martian surface.
