The Mars Daily Editorial Team produces Mars Daily's coverage of Mars exploration and science. We report on rovers and orbiters, sample-return and human-Mars planning, and the geology, atmosphere and astrobiology of the Red Planet. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Mars Daily takes editorial responsibility for content under this byline. For more on how we work, see our editorial policy.

Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 28, 2010 - Spirit is staying put. NASA has designated the once-roving scientific explorer a stationary science platform after months of unsuccessful attempts to free it from a sand trap.

Huntsville AL (SPX) Jan 27, 2010 - It rises in the east at sunset, pumpkin-orange and brighter than a first magnitude star. You stare at it, unblinking. Unblinking, it stares right back. It is Mars.

Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 26, 2010 - After six years of unprecedented exploration of the Red Planet, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit no longer will be a fully mobile robot. NASA has designated the once-roving scientific explorer a stationary science platform after efforts during the past several months to free it from a sand trap have been unsuccessful.

Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 26, 2010 - NASA's IceBite project will spend three austral summers in Antarctica testing ice-penetrating drills for a future mission to Mars. A team of seven scientists recently returned from the first field season, installing scientific probes in the ice and frozen ground, and scouting for sites where the drills will be tested the following year.

Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 26, 2010 - NASA's Mars exploration rover Opportunity is allowing scientists to get a glimpse deep inside Mars. Perched on a rippled Martian plain, a dark rock not much bigger than a basketball was the target of interest for Opportunity during the past two months. Dubbed Marquette Island, the rock is providing a better understanding of the mineral and chemical makeup of the Martian interior.

Washington (AFP) Jan 26, 2010 - NASA admitted defeat Tuesday saying efforts to free the Spirit rover bogged down by Martian sand were over and instead the plucky robot was hunkering down to brave the harsh Mars winter.

Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 22, 2010 - The most powerful camera aboard a NASA spacecraft orbiting Mars will soon be taking photo suggestions from the public. Since arriving at Mars in 2006, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE, camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has recorded nearly 13,000 observations of the Red Planet's terrain. Each image covers dozens of square miles and reveal details as small as a desk. Now, anyone can nominate sites for pictures.

Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 21, 2010 - NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter has completed 11 overflights, listening for the Phoenix Mars Lander on Jan. 19 and 20, without hearing anything from the lander. Nineteen more listening overflights are planned this week, and additional attempts in February and March.

Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 20, 2010 - Sols 2137-2143 - Spirit remains embedded at the location called Troy on the West side of Home Plate. Extrication drives were tried on sols 2138, 2140 and 2142 (Jan. 7, 9 and 11, 2010).

Lisbon, Portugal (SPX) Jan 20, 2010 - Hundreds of Portuguese high school students were recently given a distinct privilege: a look at what future Mars missions could look like, as described by former NASA astronaut Laurence R. Young.

Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 20, 2010 - Sols 2118-2124 - Opportunity spent Sols 2118 to 2121 (Jan. 7-11, 2010; no sol number corresponds to Jan. 8 because no noon at Opportunity's location fell during that date's 24 hours Pacific Standard Time) completing the investigation of Marquette Island, a curious rock on the plains of Meridiani.
