OrbComm is aiming for a slice of the US military and federal agency market for its satellite-based data messaging services.
Through a service-provider agreement with GTE Government Systems, an established supplier of telecommunications to defense and civilian Federal agencies, OrbComm will initially be aiming for defense customers who are increasing their use of civilian communication services to reduce costs.
GTE Government Systems offers its customers an extensive complement of technologies and services that take advantage of new commercial positioning and communications products and services to provide integrated global asset-management solutions.
GTE believes that the service-provider agreement with OrbComm will its ability to provide end-to-end systems for these applications, and GTE intends to immediately target Department of Defense customers with these offerings.
"With GTE Government Systems' global reach and telecommunications expertise, they are an ideal provider of OrbComm's services," said OrbComm's CEO, Scott L. Webster
"Our constellation of LEO satellites will give GTE's customers end-to-end communications solutions, ensuring that these customers will be able to continually stay in contact with their mobile or remote assets.
Webster said OrbComm would begin exploring ways of expanding its agreement with GTE to bring these solutions to customers the world over.
