The relentless heatwave in Europe claimed the lives of three Dutch pensioners in a nursing home last weekend, the ANP news agency reported on Friday.

The victims lived in a nursing home in the central town of Nieuwegein, which has a flat roof and no air-conditioning and already had health problems prior to the heatwave.

According to a doctor from the local health authorities it is most likely that the elderly patients died of a combination of a viral infection and the heat.

In total five people from the same nursing home fell ill and developed high fevers but two recovered, ANP said.
