An earthquake measuring 6.1 in magnitude rocked northeastern Taiwan Friday, the seismology centre said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The undersea tremor struck at 03:40 pm (0740 GMT) with its epicentre 82 kilometres (50 miles) southeast of Nanau in Ilan county, it said.

Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is regularly shaken by earthquakes. The country's worst, a 7.6-magnitude quake, killed around 2,400 people in September 1999.
