NASA Hit By Few Y2K Bugs

Washington (AFP) January 1, 2000 -
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration encountered "minor anomalies" as it entered the new millennium, but none was serious enough to disrupt any of its operations, the agency announced Saturday.

As all US states rolled over into the year 2000, "NASA continues to be 'green,' meaning Agency systems have not been substantively affected by any problems during the year-end transition," NASA said in a statement.

But the agency admitted suffering "a few minor anomalies that were easily fixed."

"Only one, involving a piece of planning software, appeared to be Y2K related, and it did not affect any mission-critical systems," explained the statement, which, however, offered no specifics.

NASA said that its spacecraft and related communications systems were functioning without incident.

Meanwhile, the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, reported that the computer aboard the International Space Station had been successfully activated after a short operator-induced pause in advance of the Y2K transition in Russia.

NASA said the station was taken off line Friday, before Moscow's rollover, as a precautionary measure.

The agency said it would continue to check its systems next week.
