Revealing More About The Atmosphere Of Mars
Dallas TX (SPX) Oct 18, 2010
Instruments designed by a UT Dallas professor to measure atmospheric components on the surface of Mars have uncovered important clues about the planet's atmosphere and climate history. The findings, published in a recent issue of the journal Science, reveal how carbon dioxide isotopes have reacted to volcanic activity, water and weathering - thus forming a more complete picture of the current Martian atmosphere. The NASA mission in which this work was accomplished was the Phoenix Lander, an ... read more

US to go back to Mars in probe of 'lost atmosphere' mystery
Washington (AFP) Oct 5, 2010
The US space agency NASA announced Tuesday it has given the green light to a mission to Mars aimed at investigating the mystery of how the "red planet" lost its atmosphere. NASA gave the approval Monday for "the development and 2013 launch of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission," the agency said in a statement, noting that the project may also show Mars' history of sup ... more

Atmosphere Checked, One Mars Year Before A Landing
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 30, 2010
What will the Martian atmosphere be like when the next Mars rover descends through it for landing in August of 2012? An instrument studying the Martian atmosphere from orbit has begun a four-week campaign to characterize daily atmosphere changes, one Mars year before the arrival of the Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity. A Mars year equals 687 Earth days. The planet's thin atmosphere ... more

First Results From Herschel Mars Observations
Rome, Italy (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
The Herschel Space Observatory is providing its first results on Mars. An accurate globally-averaged temperature profile of the Martian atmosphere may cause scientists to revise their models about atmospheric circulation on Mars. The first sub-millimeter observation of molecular oxygen on the planet may lead to a completely new picture of the oxygen distribution in the Martian atmosphere. These are only a few of the new discoveries presented by Dr. Paul Hartogh at the European Planetary Science Co ... read more
