Long-Lived Mars Odyssey Gets New Project Manager
Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 18, 2010
The new project manager for the longest-working spacecraft currently active at Mars, NASA's Mars Odyssey, has a long track record himself. He is Gaylon McSmith, a former pilot of U.S. Air Force fighter jets and Continental Airlines airliners. At NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., he has been a leader on the Odyssey team since two months after the spacecraft began orbiting Mars in October 2001. On Dec. 15 of this year, Odyssey will break the record for the longest-working spa ... read more

Atmosphere Checked, One Mars Year Before A Landing
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 30, 2010
What will the Martian atmosphere be like when the next Mars rover descends through it for landing in August of 2012? An instrument studying the Martian atmosphere from orbit has begun a four-week campaign to characterize daily atmosphere changes, one Mars year before the arrival of the Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity. A Mars year equals 687 Earth days. The planet's thin atmosphere ... more

Synthetic Life Could Aid Space Exploration
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 24, 2010
When packing for a manned mission to Mars or the Moon, the best thing to bring may not be food or fuel, but specially designed organisms that can create those things for you. Scientists are researching the possibility of engineering synthetic organisms that could use the resources available in the solar system to create the supplies astronauts would need to survive on another planet. ... more

Opportunity Approaching Possible Meteorite
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 24, 2010
Images that NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity took at the end of an 81-meter (266-foot) drive on Sept. 16 reveal a dark rock about 31 meters (102 feet) away. The rover's science team has decided to go get a closer look at the toaster-sized rock and determine whether it is an iron meteorite. "The dark color, rounded texture and the way it is perched on the surface all make it look like an iron meteorite," said science-team member Matt Golombek of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasa ... read more
