Rover Nears 15 Miles Of Driving On Mars Pasadena CA (JPL) Oct 15, 2010 Opportunity drove only once this past week, nearing the 24-kilometer (15-mile) odometry mark. On Sol 2382 (Oct. 6, 2010), the rover covered over 94 meters (308 feet) on her trek to Endeavour crater. With the use of autonomous navigation, the rover collects many more data products which fill the available flash memory. So occasionally, time has to be taken to work off this data backlog, limiting driving and other activities in the interim. The process was delayed due to a temporary Deep ... read more |

Opportunity's Surroundings After Sol 2363 Drive Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 30, 2010 This mosaic of images from the navigation camera on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity shows surroundings of the rover's location following an 81-meter (266-foot) drive during the 2,363rd Martian day, or sol, of Opportunity's mission on Mars (Sept. 16, 2010). The camera took the component images for this 360-degree panorama during sols 2363 to 2365. The terrain includes light-toned ... more Synthetic Life Could Aid Space Exploration Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 24, 2010 When packing for a manned mission to Mars or the Moon, the best thing to bring may not be food or fuel, but specially designed organisms that can create those things for you. Scientists are researching the possibility of engineering synthetic organisms that could use the resources available in the solar system to create the supplies astronauts would need to survive on another planet. ... more First Results From Herschel Mars Observations Rome, Italy (SPX) Sep 24, 2010 The Herschel Space Observatory is providing its first results on Mars. An accurate globally-averaged temperature profile of the Martian atmosphere may cause scientists to revise their models about atmospheric circulation on Mars. The first sub-millimeter observation of molecular oxygen on the planet may lead to a completely new picture of the oxygen distribution in the Martian atmosphere. ... more |

Mars Methane Lasts Less Than A Year Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 23, 2010 Methane in the atmosphere of Mars lasts less than a year, according to a study by Italian scientists. Sergio Fonti (Universita del Salento) and Giuseppe Marzo (NASA Ames) have used observations from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft to track the evolution of the gas over three martian years. They presented their results at the European Planetary Science Congress in Rome on Tuesday 21st September. "Only small amounts of methane are present in the martian atmosphere, coming from very localized ... read more |
