NASA official: Moon still matters
Wash., D.C. (UPI) Oct 1, 2010
NASA new direction of sending astronauts to the asteroids or Mars doesn't mean a return to the moon is out of the question, the U.S. agency's deputy head says. NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver said the moon has a role to play in the new space exploration plan set by President Barack Obama and approved by Congress this week. Don't Forget Deimos
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
Next year, Russia plans to launch a mission to Phobos, the largest moon of Mars. This spacecraft, called Phobos-Grunt, will be the first spacecraft to land on this moon, and also the first mission to return samples of Phobos to Earth. Phobos is an interesting object, and it's been studied a lot by orbiting spacecraft. The moon is in a fairly low orbit around Mars, which makes it easy to se ... more

NASA's Next Mars Rover Rolls Over Ramps
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 14, 2010
The rover Curiosity, which NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission will place on Mars in August 2012, has been rolling over ramps in a clean room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to test its mobility system. Curiosity uses the same type of six-wheel, rocker-bogie suspension system as previous Mars rovers, for handling uneven terrain during drives. Its wheels are half a meter (20 in ... more

Mars rover halfway to next destination
Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) Sep 9, 2010
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has reached the halfway point in its journey to its next science destination on the planet, U.S. scientists say. With a drive of 364 feet on Monday, Opportunity was halfway on its 11.8-mile journey from Victoria Crater to Endeavour Crater, the agency said Thursday. After completing its three-month primary mission in April 2004, Opportunity spent two years exploring in and around Victoria Crater, which is about a half mile in diameter. Ende ... read more
