Atmosphere Checked, One Mars Year Before A Landing
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 30, 2010
What will the Martian atmosphere be like when the next Mars rover descends through it for landing in August of 2012? An instrument studying the Martian atmosphere from orbit has begun a four-week campaign to characterize daily atmosphere changes, one Mars year before the arrival of the Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity. A Mars year equals 687 Earth days. The planet's thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide is highly repeatable from year to year at the same time of day and seasonal date during nor ... read more

NASA's Next Mars Rover Rolls Over Ramps
Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 14, 2010
The rover Curiosity, which NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission will place on Mars in August 2012, has been rolling over ramps in a clean room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to test its mobility system. Curiosity uses the same type of six-wheel, rocker-bogie suspension system as previous Mars rovers, for handling uneven terrain during drives. Its wheels are half a meter (20 in ... more

Russia to test Mars lander for 2011 flight
Moscow (UPI) Sep 11, 2010
Russian scientists say they're preparing to test an unmanned lander for a 2011 mission to Phobos, one of the moons of Mars. The Phobos-Grunt spacecraft will land on the surface of Phobos, take soil samples and return them to Earth, RIA Novosti reported Friday. "The aim of the test is to narrow down the lander's projected impact location on the surface of the Earth," a statement b ... more

How Microbes Could Help Colonize Mars
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 10, 2010
Tiny rock-eating microbes could mine precious extraterrestrial resources from Mars and pave the way for the first human colonists. Just don't expect them to transform the red planet's surface into a new Earth on a short deadline, researchers say. One of the most promising planetary colonizers comes in the form of cyanobacteria. The ancient bacteria helped create a habitable Earth with oxyg ... more

Opportunity Rover Reaches Halfway Point Of Long Trek
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 09, 2010
When NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity left Victoria Crater two years ago this month, the rover science team chose Endeavour Crater as the rover's next long-term destination. With a drive of 111 meters (364 feet) on Monday, Sept. 8, Opportunity reached the estimated halfway point of the approximately 19-kilometer (11.8-mile) journey from Victoria to the western rim of Endeavour. Opportunity completed its three-month prime mission on Mars in April 2004. During its bonus extended opera ... read more
