Synthetic Life Could Aid Space Exploration Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 24, 2010 When packing for a manned mission to Mars or the Moon, the best thing to bring may not be food or fuel, but specially designed organisms that can create those things for you. Scientists are researching the possibility of engineering synthetic organisms that could use the resources available in the solar system to create the supplies astronauts would need to survive on another planet. "Personally I'm interested in space settlement," said John Cumbers, a graduate student at NASA's Ames Researc ... read more |

How Microbes Could Help Colonize Mars Moffett Field CA (SPX) Sep 10, 2010 Tiny rock-eating microbes could mine precious extraterrestrial resources from Mars and pave the way for the first human colonists. Just don't expect them to transform the red planet's surface into a new Earth on a short deadline, researchers say. One of the most promising planetary colonizers comes in the form of cyanobacteria. The ancient bacteria helped create a habitable Earth with oxyg ... more NASA Data Shed New Light About Water And Volcanoes On Mars Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 10, 2010 Data from NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander suggest liquid water has interacted with the Martian surface throughout the planet's history and into modern times. The research also provides new evidence that volcanic activity has persisted on the Red Planet into geologically recent times, several million years ago. Although the lander, which arrived on Mars on May 25, 2008, is no longer operating, N ... more Mars rover halfway to next destination Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) Sep 9, 2010 NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has reached the halfway point in its journey to its next science destination on the planet, U.S. scientists say. With a drive of 364 feet on Monday, Opportunity was halfway on its 11.8-mile journey from Victoria Crater to Endeavour Crater, the agency said Thursday. After completing its three-month primary mission in April 2004, Opportunit ... more |

Next Mars Rover Stretches Robotic Arm Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 06, 2010 Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory rover that will be on Mars two years from now, has been flexing the robotic arm that spacecraft workers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory attached to the rover body in August 2010. The arm will be crucial for putting samples of soil or powdered rock into analytical instruments inside the rover. A camera and spectrometer to be installed at the end of the arm will also examine rocks and soils in place. The Mars Science Laboratory will launch from ... read more |
