Strong Robotic Arm Extends From Next Mars Rover
Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 17, 2010
NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has been exercising its robotic arm since last month, when the arm was first fastened to the rover. In the long run, watch for this long and strong arm to become the signature apparatus of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory. After landing in August 2012, the mission will rely on it for repeated research activities. One set of moves crucial to the mission's success has never been tried before on Mars: pulling pulverized samples from the interior of Martian rocks and placing ... read more

Orcus Patera - Mars's Mysterious Elongated Crater
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Aug 30, 2010
Orcus Patera is an enigmatic elliptical depression near Mars's equator, in the eastern hemisphere of the planet. Located between the volcanoes of Elysium Mons and Olympus Mons, its formation remains a mystery. Often overlooked, this well-defined depression extends approximately 380 by 140 kilometres in a north-northeast to south-southwest direction. It has a rim that rises up to 1800 metre ... more

High-res camera snaps water ice on Mars
Tucson (UPI) Aug 27, 2010
A NASA spacecraft with a high-resolution camera has photographed a young Mars crater and found frozen water in it, scientists say. A recent image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter HiRISE camera shows water ice at the bottom of a 20-foot-wide crater on the planet's surface, SPACE.com reported Friday. Researchers suspect the crater in the northern hemisphere formed recently, ... more

Sunlight Spawns Many Binary And 'Divorced' Binary Asteroids
Berkeley CA (SPX) Aug 27, 2010
The asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter is often depicted as a dull zone of dead rocks with an occasional wayward speedster smashing through on its way toward the sun. A new study appearing in the journal Nature paints a different picture, one of slow but steady change, where sunlight gradually drives asteroids to split in two and move far apart to become independent asteroids among the ... more

Shipwrecks Of Mars
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Aug 26, 2010
Mars exploration is preparing for another surge. NASA and the European Space Agency are pooling their resources for a powerful new set of missions later this decade, and next year, we will see the launch of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory rover, Russia's Phobos-Grunt mission, and China's Yinghuo orbiter. With several active missions currently exploring Mars, we've taken our attention away from some of the unsolved mysteries of the past. Mars remains the most dangerous place in deep space for robot ... read more
