JOVIAN DREAMS
Where In The World Is Europa
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
Instead of flying to Europa without first testing what a mission there might experience, now a number of sites on Earth - and beyond - that mimic the Jovian moon are being uncovered that could help explorers conduct trial runs. Missions to Mars such as the Mars Exploration Rovers were exhaustively field-tested in "Mars Yards" - areas whose terrain mimicked the red planet. In much the same way, researchers would like to rehearse missions to explore Europa using analogs of that moon on Earth. ... read more

Spirit May Never Phone Home Again
Huntsville AL (SPX) Aug 02, 2010
NASA mission controllers have not heard from Mars rover Spirit since March 22 as the rover faces its toughest challenge yet - trying to survive the harsh Martian winter. On July 26, mission managers began using a paging technique called "sweep and beep" in an effort to communicate with Spirit. "Instead of just listening, we send commands to the rover to respond back to us with a comm ... more

Greening The Moon And Mars
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jul 30, 2010
Future manned missions to the Moon or Mars could use plants as bio-harvesters to extract valuable elements from the alien soils, researchers say. Now they hope to launch new experiments to follow up on tests done with plants and lunar regolith during NASA's Apollo program that landed men on the Moon. Lunar regolith is a loose mixture of dust, soil, broken rock and other related mater ... more

Wyle Scientist To Study Stress In Haughton-Mars Project Spaceflight Analog
El Segundo CA (SPX) Jul 30, 2010
A remote Canadian island is being used to simulate isolated space flight conditions for a NASA-funded medical research study that could produce important information to assist astronauts in potential long duration flights to Mars or an asteroid. The Haughton-Mars Project Research Station on Devon Island, well above the Arctic Circle, has many features of isolation and terrain that make it ... more

DLR Investigates The Existence Of Liquid Salt Solutions On Mars
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Jul 29, 2010
Is it possible that there are salt solutions on Mars that remain liquid despite the extremely low temperatures - a class of fluids known as cryobrines? Research findings at the German Aerospace Center have shown that this is a theoretical possibility. Experiments and modelling have indicated that the required conditions exist, especially during the Martian northern summer at higher latitudes. Prof. Diedrich Mohlmann of the DLR Institute of Planetary Research presented these initial findings on Fri ... read more
