Spirit In Sweep And Beep Mode Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 09, 2010 Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). It is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication and gone into a deep sleep, trying to recharge her batteries. There is the additional risk that the rover may trip a mission clock fault. If that happens, the rover would lose track of time and remain asleep un ... read more |

Martian Dust Devil Whirls Into Opportunity's View Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 30, 2010 In its six-and-a-half years on Mars, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity had never seen a dust devil before this month, despite some systematic searches in past years and the fact that its twin rover, Spirit, has seen dozens of dust devils at its location halfway around the planet. A tall column of swirling dust appears in a routine image that Opportunity took with its panoramic came ... more DLR Investigates The Existence Of Liquid Salt Solutions On Mars Bonn, Germany (SPX) Jul 29, 2010 Is it possible that there are salt solutions on Mars that remain liquid despite the extremely low temperatures - a class of fluids known as cryobrines? Research findings at the German Aerospace Center have shown that this is a theoretical possibility. Experiments and modelling have indicated that the required conditions exist, especially during the Martian northern summer at higher latitud ... more Curiosity Rover Grows By Leaps And Bounds Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 26, 2010 Talk about a growth-spurt. In one week, Curiosity grew by approximately 1 meter (3.5 feet) when spacecraft technicians and engineers attached the rover's neck and head (called the Remote Sensing Mast) to its body. At around 2 meters (about 7 feet) tall, the next rover to Mars now stands head and shoulders above the rest. Mounted on Curiosity's mast are two navigation cameras (Navcams), two ... more |

WISE Discovers Over 90 Near-Earth Objects Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010 NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, completed its first survey of the entire sky on July 17, 2010. The mission has generated more than one million images so far, of everything from asteroids to distant galaxies. So far, WISE has observed more than 100,000 asteroids, both known and previously unseen. Most of these space rocks are in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. However, some are near-Earth objects, asteroids and comets with orbits that pass relatively close to Earth. WIS ... read more |
