Opportunity Back To Normal Operations
Pasadena CA (SPX) Aug 02, 2010
Opportunity's activities were impacted by the Odyssey spacecraft safe-mode event. However, with the recovery of Odyssey, normal operations with the rover have resumed. Direct-to-Earth (DTE) X-band communications and some Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter relay passes were used by Opportunity, while Odyssey was unavailable to support data relay. On Sol 2309 (July 23, 2010), Opportunity collected remote sensing images along with an atmospheric argon measurement with the alpha particle X-ray spectrom ... read more

Team Shows Unity During First Month Of Mars Flight Simulation
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Jul 16, 2010
Six participants in the Mars-500 simulation of a manned mission to the Red Planet demonstrated team spirit and unity during the first month of the project, a Russian scientific institute that conducts the experiment said. The Moscow Institute of Medical and Biological Problems started the 520-day experiment on June 3. The project is due to simulate almost all aspects of a journey to the Re ... more

Giant Antenna Propped Up And Ready For Joint Replacement
Goldstone CA (SPX) Jul 16, 2010
Workers at NASA's Deep Space Network complex in Goldstone, Calif., have been making precise, laser-assisted measurements to ensure a flat surface for pouring new grout as part of a major renovation on the 70-meter-wide (230-foot-wide) "Mars antenna." While officially dubbed Deep Space Station 14, the antenna picked up the Mars name from its first task: tracking NASA's Mariner 4 spacecraft, ... more

Mars Rover Curiosity Spins Its Wheels
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 14, 2010
The wheels that will touch down on Mars in 2012 are several rotations closer to spinning on the rocky trails of Mars. This video clip shows engineers in the JPL clean room where the rover is being assembled as they put all six wheels into motion for the first time. Engineers raised the rover just as a car mechanic would hoist a car to check the wheels, and started the "engine" to get ... more

Spirit Still Silent
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 09, 2010
Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). As stated previously, it is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication and gone into a deep sleep. While sleeping, the rover will use the available solar array energy to recharge her batteries. When the batteries recover to a sufficient state of charge, Spiri ... read more
