WISE Discovers Over 90 Near-Earth Objects
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, completed its first survey of the entire sky on July 17, 2010. The mission has generated more than one million images so far, of everything from asteroids to distant galaxies. So far, WISE has observed more than 100,000 asteroids, both known and previously unseen. Most of these space rocks are in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. However, some are near-Earth objects, asteroids and comets with orbits that pass relatively close to Earth. WIS ... read more

Opportunity To See More Detail At Crater Destination
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 30, 2010
Mars rover team members have begun informally naming features around the rim of Endeavour Crater, as they develop plans to investigate that destination when NASA's Opportunity rover arrives there after many more months of driving. A new, super-resolution view of a portion of Endeavour's rim reveals details that were not discernible in earlier images from the rover. Several high points alon ... more

Rocky Mounds And A Plateau On Mars
Paris, France (ESA) Jun 29, 2010
When Mars Express set sail for the crater named after Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, it found a windblown plateau and mysterious rocky mounds nearby. Stretching across 190 x 112 km, this region of Mars covers an area of about 21 280 sq km, which is roughly the size of Slovenia. It is located to the southwest of the volcanic region Tharsis on the southern highlands of Mars, near t ... more

Spirit Standing By At Troy
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 29, 2010
Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). As stated previously, it is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication and gone into a deep sleep. While sleeping, the rover will use the available solar a ... more

Study indicates life was possible all over Mars
Paris (AFP) June 25, 2010
Conditions suitable for life - most notably the presence of water - may once have existed all over Mars, the European Space Agency (ESA) said Friday. Hydrated silicate minerals were found by the ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance orbiters in northern lowlands of the Red Planet, a clear indication that water once flowed there, ESA said in a statement ahead of the publication of a study in journal Science. Water was present on the surface of Mars four billion years ago but lasted ... read more
