Wind Cleans Solar Panels
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 19, 2010
Opportunity's driving campaign toward Endeavour Crater has benefitted from a recent solar array dust-cleaning event. The rover began the past reporting week with a drive of just over 68 meters (223 feet) on Sol 2295 (July 8, 2010). The rover then spent the weekend conducting a robotic arm campaign on a surface target called "Juneau Road Cut," collecting both Microscopic Imager (MI) image stacks and an Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) integration. On Sol 2298 (July 11, 2010), Op ... read more

Wet Era On Early Mars Was Global
Paris, France (SPX) Jun 28, 2010
Conditions favourable to life may once have existed all over Mars. Detailed studies of minerals found inside craters show that liquid water was widespread, not only in the southern highlands, but also beneath the northern plains. ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have discovered hydrated silicate minerals in the northern lowlands of Mars, a clear indication that wat ... more

Study indicates life was possible all over Mars
Paris (AFP) June 25, 2010
Conditions suitable for life - most notably the presence of water - may once have existed all over Mars, the European Space Agency (ESA) said Friday. Hydrated silicate minerals were found by the ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance orbiters in northern lowlands of the Red Planet, a clear indication that water once flowed there, ESA said in a statement ahead of the publication ... more

New Clues Suggest Wet Era On Early Mars Was Global
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 25, 2010
Minerals in northern Mars craters seen by two orbiters suggest that a phase in Mars' early history with conditions favorable to life occurred globally, not just in the south. Southern and northern Mars differ in many ways, so the extent to which they shared ancient environments has been open to question. In recent years, the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter and NASA's Mar ... more

Teen project one-ups NASA, finds hole in Mars cave
Washington (AFP) June 23, 2010
A teen school project on Mars uncovered a surprise - what appears to be a hole in the roof of a cave on the red planet, researchers said Wednesday. The 16 students in a 7th grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, California, chose to study lava tubes, a common volcanic feature on Earth and Mars as their class project sponsored by Arizona State University's Mars Education Program. The students developed a research project focused on finding the most common locations of lava ... read more
