Team Shows Unity During First Month Of Mars Flight Simulation Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Jul 16, 2010 Six participants in the Mars-500 simulation of a manned mission to the Red Planet demonstrated team spirit and unity during the first month of the project, a Russian scientific institute that conducts the experiment said. The Moscow Institute of Medical and Biological Problems started the 520-day experiment on June 3. The project is due to simulate almost all aspects of a journey to the Red Planet, with a 250-day outward trip, a 30-day stay on its surface, and a 240-day return flight. Despit ... read more |

Study indicates life was possible all over Mars Paris (AFP) June 25, 2010 Conditions suitable for life - most notably the presence of water - may once have existed all over Mars, the European Space Agency (ESA) said Friday. Hydrated silicate minerals were found by the ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance orbiters in northern lowlands of the Red Planet, a clear indication that water once flowed there, ESA said in a statement ahead of the publication ... more New Clues Suggest Wet Era On Early Mars Was Global Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 25, 2010 Minerals in northern Mars craters seen by two orbiters suggest that a phase in Mars' early history with conditions favorable to life occurred globally, not just in the south. Southern and northern Mars differ in many ways, so the extent to which they shared ancient environments has been open to question. In recent years, the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter and NASA's Mar ... more Brown Team Finds Widespread Glacial Meltwater Valleys On Mars Providence RI (SPX) Jun 25, 2010 Planetary scientists have uncovered telltale signs of water on Mars - frozen and liquid - in the earliest period of the Red Planet's history. A new claim, made public this month, is that a deep ocean covered some of the northern latitudes. But the evidence for water grows much more scant after the Noachian era, which ended 3.5 billion years ago. Now Brown University planetary geologists ha ... more |

Opportunity Breaks The 13 Mile Mark Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 21, 2010 Opportunity is driving again and has now covered 21 kilometers (13 miles) of odometry on Mars. The pancam mast assembly (PMA) azimuth error from Sol 2257 (May 30, 2010), has been attributed to a problem within the miniature thermal emission spectrometer (Mini-TES) instrument. An investigation of the Mini-TES is ongoing. The PMA has been restored to operation for imaging (not Mini-TES use). On Sol 2267 (June 10, 2010), a quick fine attitude (QFA) was performed to refine the rover's atti ... read more |
