Mars Rover Curiosity Spins Its Wheels Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 14, 2010 The wheels that will touch down on Mars in 2012 are several rotations closer to spinning on the rocky trails of Mars. This video clip shows engineers in the JPL clean room where the rover is being assembled as they put all six wheels into motion for the first time. Engineers raised the rover just as a car mechanic would hoist a car to check the wheels, and started the "engine" to get the wheels rotating. The wheel mobility system has 10 motors in all-four for steering the rover and six for d ... read more |

Brown Team Finds Widespread Glacial Meltwater Valleys On Mars Providence RI (SPX) Jun 25, 2010 Planetary scientists have uncovered telltale signs of water on Mars - frozen and liquid - in the earliest period of the Red Planet's history. A new claim, made public this month, is that a deep ocean covered some of the northern latitudes. But the evidence for water grows much more scant after the Noachian era, which ended 3.5 billion years ago. Now Brown University planetary geologists ha ... more Opportunity Completes Three Drives This Week Pasadena CA (SPX) Jun 25, 2010 Opportunity has been making good progress toward Endeavour crater with three drives in the past week. On Sol 2274 (June 17, 2010), the rover completed over 60 meters (197 feet) driving due east. On Sol 2276 (June 19, 2010), the rover made a small J-turn to avoid a ripple and then headed 72 meters (236 feet) east. With this drive, Opportunity has passed the distance for a half-maratho ... more Teen project one-ups NASA, finds hole in Mars cave Washington (AFP) June 23, 2010 A teen school project on Mars uncovered a surprise - what appears to be a hole in the roof of a cave on the red planet, researchers said Wednesday. The 16 students in a 7th grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, California, chose to study lava tubes, a common volcanic feature on Earth and Mars as their class project sponsored by Arizona State University's Mars Educati ... more |

Middle-School Project Discovers Cave Skylight On Mars Tempe AZ (SPX) Jun 18, 2010 They went looking for lava tubes on Mars - and found what may be a hole in the roof of a Martian cave. The 16 students in Dennis Mitchell's 7th-grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., chose to study lava tubes, a common volcanic feature on Earth and Mars. It was their class project for the Mars Student Imaging Program (MSIP), a component of ASU's Mars Education Program, which is run out of the Mars Space Flight Facility on the Tempe campus.
