European probe Rosetta successfully flies by asteroid: ESA
Paris (AFP) July 11, 2010
The European spacecraft Rosetta performed a fly-by of a massive asteroid on Saturday, the European Space Agency said, taking images that could one day help Earth defend itself from destruction. Racing through the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter at 47,800 kph (29,925 mph), the billion-euro (1.25-billion-dollar) probe flew within 3,200 kms (2,000 miles) of the huge potato-shaped rock, Lutetia. "The fly-by has been a spectacular success with Rosetta performing fautlessly," ESA said in a stat ... read more

Teen project one-ups NASA, finds hole in Mars cave
Washington (AFP) June 23, 2010
A teen school project on Mars uncovered a surprise - what appears to be a hole in the roof of a cave on the red planet, researchers said Wednesday. The 16 students in a 7th grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, California, chose to study lava tubes, a common volcanic feature on Earth and Mars as their class project sponsored by Arizona State University's Mars Educati ... more

Opportunity Breaks The 13 Mile Mark
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 21, 2010
Opportunity is driving again and has now covered 21 kilometers (13 miles) of odometry on Mars. The pancam mast assembly (PMA) azimuth error from Sol 2257 (May 30, 2010), has been attributed to a problem within the miniature thermal emission spectrometer (Mini-TES) instrument. An investigation of the Mini-TES is ongoing. The PMA has been restored to operation for imaging (not Mini-TES ... more

Spirit Catching More Rays
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 21, 2010
Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). It is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication and gone into a deep sleep. While sleeping, the rover will use the available solar array energy to recharg ... more

NASA Dryden Hosts Radar Tests For Next Mars Landing
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 16, 2010
Engineers with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., are running diverse trials with a test version of the radar system that will enable NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission to put the Curiosity rover onto the Martian surface in August 2012. One set of tests conducted over a desert lakebed at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif., in May 2010 used flights with a helicopter simulating specific descent paths anticipated for Martian sites. During the final stage ... read more
