Wet Era On Early Mars Was Global Paris, France (SPX) Jun 28, 2010 Conditions favourable to life may once have existed all over Mars. Detailed studies of minerals found inside craters show that liquid water was widespread, not only in the southern highlands, but also beneath the northern plains. ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have discovered hydrated silicate minerals in the northern lowlands of Mars, a clear indication that water once flowed there. The spacecraft have previously discovered thousands of small outcrops in the south ... read more |

A New Model To Explain Absence of Organic Compounds On Mars Surface New Rochelle NY (SPX) Jun 11, 2010 The ongoing search for evidence of past or present life on Mars includes efforts to identify organic compounds such as proteins in Martian soil, but their absence to date remains a mystery. A new theory to explain what happens to these carbon-based molecules is presented in an article published in Astrobiology "There may be no 'safe haven' for these organic molecules on Mars," conclude Ily ... more Radar system tested for Mars rover landing Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) Jun 11, 2010 The U.S. space agency says it is testing a version of the radar system that will be used to land a new rover on Mars in August 2012. Engineers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory conducted one test last month at the Dryden Flight Research Center near Edwards, Calif., using a helicopter to simulate specific descent paths that might used at various martian landing sites. The new ... more Detailed Martian Scenes In New Images From Mars Orbiter Pasadena CA (SPX) Jun 10, 2010 Six hundred recent observations of the Mars landscape from an orbiting telescopic camera include scenes of sinuous gullies, geometrical ridges and steep cliffs. Each of the 600 newly released observations from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter covers an area of several square miles on Mars and reveals details as small a ... more |

Opportunity For Power Increase Comes With Passing Of Winter Solstice Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 09, 2010 With the passing of the winter solstice and improving power, Opportunity continues to drive towards Endeavour crater. On Sol 2254 (May 27, 2010), the rover drove about 26 meters (85 feet) to the south/south east. Opportunity drove again on Sol 2256 (May 29, 2010), for about 25 meters (82 feet). But on Sol 2257 (May 30, 2010), a fault occurred with the pancam mast assembly (PMA) that supports the science and navigation cameras. The azimuth joint of the PMA did not move when commanded. On Sol ... read more |
