Ancient Ocean May Have Covered One-Third Of Mars Boulder CO (SPX) Jun 15, 2010 A vast ocean likely covered one-third of the surface of Mars some 3.5 billion years ago, according to a new study conducted by University of Colorado at Boulder scientists. The CU-Boulder study is the first to combine the analysis of water-related features including scores of delta deposits and thousands of river valleys to test for the occurrence of an ocean sustained by a global hydrosphere on early Mars. While the notion of a large, ancient ocean on Mars has been repeatedly proposed and c ... read more |

Designing The Next Rover To Explore Mars Raleigh NC (SPX) Jun 03, 2010 The concept of a wind-powered vehicle that can be used to explore the surface of Mars - a so-called "tumbleweed rover" that would roll over the surface of Mars like a tumbleweed - has been around for more than 10 years, but so far there has been no consensus on exactly what that vehicle should look like. Now researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a computer model t ... more Detecting Clues For Alien Existence Leicester, UK (SPX) Jun 03, 2010 University of Leicester scientists have announced the start of work, in collaboration with industry, on advanced instruments for ExoMars- a new mission to Mars in 2018. Spirit Still In Deep Sleep Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 02, 2010 Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). It is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication and gone into a deep sleep. While sleeping, the rover will use the available solar array energy to recharge her batteries. The rover electronics module (REM) is expected to get colder than ever before. When the ... read more |
