A third of Mars once covered by ocean: study
Paris (AFP) June 13, 2010
A huge, potentially life-giving sea likely covered more than a third of Mars some 3.5 billion years ago, according to a study released Sunday. Spread over an area the size of the Atlantic Ocean, it would have straddled the north pole and contained the equivalent of a tenth of the water on Earth. For decades scientists have argued as to whether the Red Planet once harboured bodies of water big enough to help nourish a true hydrological cycle marked by evaporation and rainfall. Recent evidence ... read more

Six men to brave 520-day isolation on 'Mars mission'
Moscow (AFP) June 3, 2010
Six men from Europe, Russia and China will on Thursday be voluntarily locked away in a module for almost one and a half years to simulate the psychological effects of a mission to Mars. An Italian, Frenchman, three Russians and a Chinese man will spend the next 520 days in the isolation facility at a Moscow research institute when its hatch slams shut at 2:00 pm (1000 GMT). Like a real M ... more

Mars500 Gaming Helps Develop Electronic Helpers For Deep Space Crews
Paris, France (ESA) Jun 03, 2010
About to be shut away from the outside world, the Mars500 volunteers still get to have fun. Their duties will include regular playing of video games - though with a serious purpose. Results from the games will help develop computerised 'electronic partners' to support crews on future deep space missions. The latest stage of the international Mars500 programme begins in June: a six-man cre ... more

520 Days On A Simulated Flight To Mars
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Jun 02, 2010
On 3 June 2010, six 'astronauts' will commence a virtual trip to Mars. Sealed into a cramped container at the Moscow Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) for 520 days, they will experience the rigours and isolation of long-duration spaceflight. This marks the start of the main part of the Mars 500 experiment, and on completion will constitute the longest ever space simulation experiment. ... more

Opportunity's Solar Panels Get Minor Cleaning
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 01, 2010
Opportunity has benefited from a small (about 10 percent) dust cleaning event on her solar arrays on or about Sol 2246 (May 19, 2010). This improves the available energy for the rover. With the passing of the winter solstice, temperatures should be improving, as well. On Sol 2247 (May 20, 2010), Opportunity completed another successful checkout of the autonomous exploration for gathering increased science (AEGIS) software. On Sol 2250 (May 23, 2010), an old problem reappeared with the miniature th ... read more
