The Earth And Moon Formed Later Than Previously Thought
Copenhagen, Denmark (SPX) Jun 08, 2010
The Earth and Moon were created as the result of a giant collision between two planets the size of Mars and Venus. Until now it was thought to have happened when the solar system was 30 million years old or approx. 4,537 million years ago. But new research from the Niels Bohr Institute shows that the Earth and Moon must have formed much later - perhaps up to 150 million years after the formation of the solar system. The research results have been published in the scientific journal, Earth and Plan ... read more

New INL Invention Could Aid Mars Probes' Search For Life
Idaho Falls ID (SPX) May 27, 2010
The next generation of Mars rovers could have smaller, cheaper, more robust and more sensitive life-detecting instruments, thanks to a new invention by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory. The INL team has come up with an efficient new way to generate complex electric fields, which will make it easier to direct ions, or charged particles, along specified ... more

Phoenix Crushed By Frost
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 27, 2010
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander has ended operations after repeated attempts to contact the spacecraft were unsuccessful. A new image transmitted by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows signs of severe ice damage to the lander's solar panels. "The Phoenix spacecraft succeeded in its investigations and exceeded its planned lifetime," said Fuk Li, manager of the Mars Exploration Program at NA ... more

Opportunity Recharging Between Drives
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 27, 2010
With the winter solstice just passed, Opportunity is constrained by power and must recharge between drives. The rover had an extended stay on the north facing site, referred to as a Lily Pad that it reached on Sol 2240 (May 13, 2010). The favorable northerly tilt provided an increase in power for extra remote science and a MarsQuake experiment. The MarsQuake experiment conducted on Sol 224 ... more

Martian probe Phoenix is kaput: NASA
Washington (AFP) May 24, 2010
NASA has declared the US Mars lander Phoenix defunct, writing it off as a victim of the red planet's icy winter after numerous unsuccessful attempts to communicate with it. NASA's Odyssey orbiter passed over the Phoenix landing site 61 times last week in a final effort to communicate but "no transmission from the lander was detected," the space agency said. The craft landed in the planet's far northern region on May 25, 2008, and sent back signals until November of the same year when the sunligh ... read more
