18-Month Mars500 Mission Has Begun
Moscow, Russia (ESA) Jun 04, 2010
Hatch closed: 18-month Mars500 mission has begun. Mars500, the first full-length simulated mission to Mars, started today in Moscow at 13:49 local time (11:49 CET), when the six-man crew entered their 'spacecraft' and the hatch was closed. The experiment will run until November next year. The mood was serious and very determined in the Mars500 facility at the Institute of Biomedical Problems in Moscow this afternoon, as the crew talked to the press and then walked into the modules that will be the ... read more

Spirit Is Past Winter Solstice
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 25, 2010
Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). It is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication and gone into a deep sleep. While sleeping, the rover will use the available solar array energy to recharg ... more

Martian probe Phoenix is kaput: NASA
Washington (AFP) May 24, 2010
NASA has declared the US Mars lander Phoenix defunct, writing it off as a victim of the red planet's icy winter after numerous unsuccessful attempts to communicate with it. NASA's Odyssey orbiter passed over the Phoenix landing site 61 times last week in a final effort to communicate but "no transmission from the lander was detected," the space agency said. The craft landed in the planet ... more

Geometry Drives Launch Date For Mar Science Lab
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 24, 2010
Planners of NASA's next Mars mission have selected a flight schedule that will use favorable positions for two currently orbiting NASA Mars orbiters to obtain maximum information during descent and landing. Continuing analysis of the geometry and communications options for the arrival at Mars have led planners for the Mars Science Laboratory, or Curiosity, to choose an Earth-to-Mars trajec ... more

Mars Rovers Set Surface Longevity Record
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 20, 2010
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project will pass a historic Martian longevity record on Thursday, May 20. The Opportunity rover will surpass the duration record set by NASA's Viking 1 Lander of six years and 116 days operating on the surface of Mars. The effects of favorable weather on the red planet could also help the rovers generate more power. Opportunity's twin rover, Spirit, began working on Mars three weeks before Opportunity. However, Spirit has been out of communication since March 22. If ... read more
