NASA Orbiter Penetrates Mysteries Of Martian Ice Cap
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 28, 2010
Data from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have helped scientists solve a pair of mysteries dating back four decades and provided new information about climate change on the Red Planet. The Shallow Radar, or SHARAD, instrument aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter revealed subsurface geology allowing scientists to reconstruct the formation of a large chasm and a series of spiral troughs on the northern ice cap of Mars. The findings appear in two papers in the May 27 issue of the journal Nature. ... read more

Opportunity Driving To Solar Energy 'Lily Pads'
Pasadena CA (SJPL) May 18, 2010
With the winter solstice at hand, Opportunity has been constrained by power and drove only once in the last week. The project is doing something new, driving Opportunity to solar energy "lily pads," places with a modest northerly tilt. On Sol 2234 (May 7, 2010), Opportunity drove about 15 meters (49 feet) and positioned herself with a slight northerly tilt on a small ripple. A drive ... more

Final Attempts To Hear From Mars Phoenix Scheduled
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 17, 2010
From May 17 to 21, NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter will conduct a fourth and final campaign to check on whether the Phoenix Mars Lander has come back to life. During that period, Odyssey will listen for a signal from Phoenix during 61 flights over the lander's site on far-northern Mars. The orbiter detected no transmission from the lander in earlier campaigns totaling 150 overflights in Januar ... more

Opportunity Drives Twice This Week
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 10, 2010
Opportunity drove twice in this latest period and took time in between to recharge her batteries. The drive on Sol 2228 (Mary 1, 2010) covered about 29 meters (95 feet). The next drive was on Sol 2231(May 4, 2010), achieved almost 33 meters (108 feet), the most that can be achieved with the available energy so close to the winter solstice. A complicating factor for Opportunity during this winter period is that she has to balance her recharge efforts against the need to stay warm. That ... read more
