Mars Rovers Set Surface Longevity Record
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 20, 2010
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project will pass a historic Martian longevity record on Thursday, May 20. The Opportunity rover will surpass the duration record set by NASA's Viking 1 Lander of six years and 116 days operating on the surface of Mars. The effects of favorable weather on the red planet could also help the rovers generate more power. Opportunity's twin rover, Spirit, began working on Mars three weeks before Opportunity. However, Spirit has been out of communication since March 22. If ... read more

Mars Rover Sees Distant Crater Rims On Horizon
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 03, 2010
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has captured a new view of the rim of Endeavour crater, the rover's destination in a multi-year traverse along the sandy Martian landscape. A portion of the rim about 13 kilometers (8 miles) away appears on the horizon at the left edge of the image, along with the rim of an even more distant crater, Iazu, on the right. Endeavour is 21 kilomet ... more

Opportunity For A Balancing Act
Pasadena CA (JPL) Apr 30, 2010
Opportunity drove twice in the last week. The rover took time in between drives to recharge her batteries and performed a soil campaign with the instrument deployment device (IDD). The drives took place on Sols 2220 (April 22, 2010), and 2226 (April 28, 2010). The drive on Sol 2220 (April 22, 2010) halted after about 10 meters (33 feet) when a slip check failed while traversing the soft si ... more

Earth Microbes May Contaminate Search For Life On Mars
Washington DC (SPX) Apr 28, 2010
Bacteria common to spacecraft may be able to survive the harsh environs of Mars long enough to inadvertently contaminate Mars with terrestrial life according to research published in the April 2010 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. The search for life on Mars remains a stated goal of NASA's Mars Exploration Program and Astrobiology Institutes. To preserve the pristine environments, the bioloads on spacecraft headed to Mars are subject to sterilization designed to prevent ... read more
