NASA listens one more time for Phoenix
Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) May 17, 2010
NASA officials say they are conducting the fourth and final series of checks this week to determine whether the Phoenix Mars Lander has resumed operations. NASA says its Mars Odyssey orbiter will listen for a signal from Phoenix during 61 flights over the lander's site on northern Mars. The orbiter detected no transmission from the lander during earlier campaigns totaling 150 overflights in January, February and April. In 2008, Phoenix completed its three-month mission studying martian i ... read more

Winter Solstice Just Three Weeks Away For Spirit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Apr 28, 2010
Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). It is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has powered off all sub-systems, except her master clock. The rover will use the available solar array energy to recharge her batteries. When the batteries ... more

Earth Microbes May Contaminate Search For Life On Mars
Washington DC (SPX) Apr 28, 2010
Bacteria common to spacecraft may be able to survive the harsh environs of Mars long enough to inadvertently contaminate Mars with terrestrial life according to research published in the April 2010 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. Opportunity Recharging Batteries In Between Drives
Pasadena CA (SPX) Apr 28, 2010
Opportunity drove three times in the last week, spending time between drives to recharge her batteries. Because of the approaching winter solstice, solar array energy levels have been dropping. Opportunity must pause from driving for a sol or two to recharge her batteries sufficiently to drive again. On Sol 2213 (April15, 2010), Opportunity drove about 66 meters (217 feet). After rec ... more

Obama sets new course to conquer the final frontier
Kennedy Space Center, Florida (AFP) April 15, 2010
President Barack Obama Thursday set a bold new course for the future of US space travel, planning to send American astronauts into Mars orbit within the next three decades. And he sought to quell a storm of outrage which met earlier plans unveiled by his administration, vowing before NASA staff that he was "100 percent committed" to their mission and the US space agency's future. "As president, I believe that space exploration is not a luxury, it's not an afterthought in America's quest for a br ... read more
