James Cameron to shoot Mars in 3-D
Los Angeles (AFP) April 29, 2010
After immersing movie-goers in the dazzling imaginary world of Pandora, "Avatar" director James Cameron is training his 3-D camera on a planet closer to home: Mars. The Pasadena Star News reported Thursday that the Oscar-winning filmmaker has persuaded NASA to install a high-resolution 3-D camera on the next generation Mars rover, Curiosity, due to launch in 2011. Cameron had lobbied NASA administrator Charles Bolden directly in a meeting in January, the newspaper reported. Cameron, whose sc ... read more

Sharp Turn Makes Opportunity For Roving Difficult
Pasadena CA (JPL) Apr 12, 2010
After taking some time to recharge her batteries, the rover attempted a drive on Sol 2202 (April 4, 2010). That drive stopped after the initial arc turn due to elevated current draw in the motors on the right side of the rover. The rover is between two ripples with the space in between forming a bowl. The rover had to push harder on the right to make the sharp turn. Conservatively-set curr ... more

Silence Has Winter Freezes The Spirit
Pasadena CA (JPL) Apr 12, 2010
Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). It is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication. The rover will use all available solar array energy to recharge her batteries. When the batteries r ... more

Opportunity For A Twin Crater Drive By
Pasadena CA (JPL) Apr 05, 2010
On Sol 2193 (March 26, 2010), Opportunity drove about 68 meters (223 feet) towards a pair of highly eroded craters. On the next sol, the rover performed a drive-by imaging of the twin craters, covering about 55 meters (180 feet). Further driving next to the twin craters was performed on Sol 2197 (March 30, 2010), getting a good look inside, with the rover covering about 30 meters (98 feet) of distance. On Sol 2199 (April 1, 2010), Opportunity left the area of the twin craters with a 50-meter (164- ... read more
