LRO Team Helps Track Laser Signals To Russian Rover Mirror
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 27, 2010
Using information provided by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) instrument teams, researchers at the University of California San Diego have successfully pinpointed the location of a long lost light reflector left on the lunar surface by bouncing laser signals from Earth to the Russian Lunokhod 1 retroreflector. The initial imaging of the two Russian rovers, Lunokhod 1 and 2 were made earlier this year by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) team, led by Mark Robinson from Arizon ... read more

Opportunity For A Twin Crater Drive By
Pasadena CA (JPL) Apr 05, 2010
On Sol 2193 (March 26, 2010), Opportunity drove about 68 meters (223 feet) towards a pair of highly eroded craters. On the next sol, the rover performed a drive-by imaging of the twin craters, covering about 55 meters (180 feet). Further driving next to the twin craters was performed on Sol 2197 (March 30, 2010), getting a good look inside, with the rover covering about 30 meters (98 feet) ... more

Opportunity At Concepcion Crater
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 29, 2010
This image shows NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity perched on the edge of "Concepcion" crater in Meridiani Planum, Mars. The image was acquired by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on February 13, 2010, during the 2,153rd Martian day, or sol, of Opportunity's mission on Mars. Concepcion crater is a fresh crater, 10 ... more

A Sleeping Spirit May Yet Awaken In The Spring
Pasadena CA (SPX) Apr 1, 2010
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit skipped a planned communication session on March 30 and, as anticipated from recent power-supply projections, has probably entered a low-power hibernation mode. In this mode, the rover's clock keeps running, but communications and other activities are suspended in order to put all available energy into heating and battery recharging. When the battery ch ... more

First Image From A Mars Rover Choosing A Target
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 29, 2010
This view results from the first observation of a target selected autonomously by a spacecraft on Mars. During the 2,172nd Martian day, or sol, of its mission on Mars (March 4, 2010), NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity used newly developed and uploaded software to choose a target from a wider-angle image and point its panoramic camera (Pancam) to observe the chosen target through 13 different filters. The imaging was part of a checkout of the new software, named Autonomous Exploration for G ... read more
