A Sleeping Spirit May Yet Awaken In The Spring
Pasadena CA (SPX) Apr 1, 2010
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit skipped a planned communication session on March 30 and, as anticipated from recent power-supply projections, has probably entered a low-power hibernation mode. In this mode, the rover's clock keeps running, but communications and other activities are suspended in order to put all available energy into heating and battery recharging. When the battery charge is adequate, the rover attempts to wake up and communicate on a schedule it knows. "We may not hear ... read more

NASA Launches Interactive Simulation Of Satellite Communications
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 10, 2010
NASA has unveiled an interactive computer simulation that allows virtual explorers of all ages to dock the space shuttle at the International Space Station, experience a virtual trip to Mars or a lunar impact, and explore images of star formations taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. In an effort to excite young people about space and NASA's missions, the agency has launched the online Spa ... more

Lava Likely Made River-Like Channel On Mars
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Mar 08, 2010
Flowing lava can carve or build paths very much like the riverbeds and canyons etched by water, and this probably explains at least one of the meandering channels on the surface of Mars. These results were presented on March 4, 2010 at the 41st Lunar and Planetary Science Conference by Jacob Bleacher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Whether channels on Mars were formed ... more

Spirit Set For Another Cold Quiet Winter
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 05, 2010
Spirit is in her winter position, still embedded in the area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. Efforts are nearing completion to prepare the rover for winter. Because of the low power levels, multi-sol plans are being developed with reduced communication activity to save energy. Only one or two planning cycles occur each week. These plans have a single uplink to the rover and few Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) downlinks to return the data. The new long-range UHF communication table i ... read more
