First Image From A Mars Rover Choosing A Target
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 29, 2010
This view results from the first observation of a target selected autonomously by a spacecraft on Mars. During the 2,172nd Martian day, or sol, of its mission on Mars (March 4, 2010), NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity used newly developed and uploaded software to choose a target from a wider-angle image and point its panoramic camera (Pancam) to observe the chosen target through 13 different filters. The imaging was part of a checkout of the new software, named Autonomous Exploration for G ... read more

Phobos Flyby Success
Koln, Germany (SPX) Mar 08, 2010
Mars Express encountered Phobos last night, smoothly skimming past at just 67 km, the closest any manmade object has ever approached Mars' enigmatic moon. The data collected could help unlock the origin of not just Phobos but other 'second generation' moons. Something is not right about Phobos. It looks like a solid object but previous flybys have shown that it is not dense enough to be so ... more

NASA Mars Orbiter Speeds Past Data Milestone
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 05, 2010
NASA's newest Mars orbiter, completing its fourth year at the Red Planet next week, has just passed a data-volume milestone unimaginable a generation ago and still difficult to fathom: 100 terabits. That 100 trillion bits of information is more data than in 35 hours of uncompressed high-definition video. It's also more than three times the amount of data from all other deep-space missions ... more

Spirit Set For Another Cold Quiet Winter
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 05, 2010
Spirit is in her winter position, still embedded in the area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. Efforts are nearing completion to prepare the rover for winter. Because of the low power levels, multi-sol plans are being developed with reduced communication activity to save energy. Only one or two planning cycles occur each week. These plans have a single uplink to the rover ... more

Mars Express Heading For Closest Flyby Of Phobos
Paris, France (ESA) Mar 02, 2010
ESA's Mars Express will skim the surface of Mars' largest moon Phobos on Wednesday evening. Passing by at an altitude of 67 km, precise radio tracking will allow researchers to peer inside the mysterious moon. Mars Express is currently engaged in a series of 12 flybys of Phobos. At each close pass, different instruments are trained towards the mysterious space rock, gaining new information. The closest flyby will take place on 3 March at 21:55 CET (20:55 GMT). From close range, Mars Express ... read more
