To Mars And Back - As Real As It Gets
Noordwijk, Netherlands (ESA) Mar 24, 2010
A crew of six, including two Europeans, will soon begin a simulated mission to Mars in a mockup that includes an interplanetary spaceship, Mars lander and martian landscape. The Mars500 experiment, as long as a real journey to Mars, is the ultimate test of human endurance. Their mission is to mimic a full mission to Mars and back as accurately as possible without actually going there: Mars500 will be the first full-duration simulated mission to Mars, starting in a special facility in Moscow next s ... read more

A Glow In The Martian Night
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Mar 03, 2010
Astrobiology Magazine (AM): Let's talk about the paper you just published in the journal Science. Jean-Loup Bertaux (JLB): Our paper is about light that was discovered on the night side of Mars. Up to now, there has been no detection of this natural light, or "air glow." It has been seen on the day side of Mars by Mariner 6, 7 and 9 in the ultraviolet, but there were no observations of the ... more

Spirit In Energy Saving Mode
Pasadena CA (SPX) Mar 02, 2010
Spirit Status for sol 2177-2184: Spirit is in her winter position, still embedded in the area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. Efforts continue to prepare the rover for winter. Because of the low power levels, multi-sol plans are being developed with reduced communication activity to save energy. These plans have a single uplink to the rover and few Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) ... more

Scientist eyes 39-day voyage to Mars
Washington (AFP) Feb 26, 2010
A journey from Earth to Mars could in the future take just 39 days - cutting current travel time nearly six times - according to a rocket scientist who has the ear of the US space agency. Franklin Chang-Diaz, a former astronaut and a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), says reaching the Red Planet could be dramatically quicker using his high-tech VASIMR rocket, now on track for liftoff after decades of development.
