Radar Map Of Buried Martian Ice Adds To Climate Record
Pasadena CA (JPL) Mar 04, 2010
Extensive radar mapping of the middle-latitude region of northern Mars shows that thick masses of buried ice are quite common beneath protective coverings of rubble. The ability of NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to continue charting the locations of these hidden glaciers and ice-filled valleys - first confirmed by radar two years ago - adds clues about how these deposits may have been left as remnants when regional ice sheets retreated. The subsurface ice deposits extend for hundreds of ... read more

Two Windows On Ozone: Extending Our View Of The Martian Atmosphere
Paris, France (ESA) Feb 18, 2010
New measurements of ozone in the atmosphere of Mars are being obtained in a coordinated observation campaign with Mars Express and a Hawaiian-based telescope. The combined observation set covers a longer time period and broader range of regions on Mars than previous campaigns, thereby improving the ability to verify and refine detailed models of the Martian atmosphere. The Martian atmosphe ... more

Spirit Parks For The Winter
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 17, 2010
Spirit is now parked for the winter in the embedded area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. The last winter-preparatory movement of the rover was commanded on Sol 2169 (Feb. 8, 2010). The rover was commanded to flatten the suspension system on the right side and accentuate the suspension wheelie on the left side, all to enhance northerly tilt. Very little change in t ... more

Phobos Flyby Season Starts Again
Paris, France (ESA) Feb 17, 2010
Today Mars Express began a series of flybys of Phobos, the largest moon of Mars. The campaign will reach its crescendo on 3 March, when the spacecraft will set a new record for the closest pass to Phobos, skimming the surface at just 50 km. The data collected could help untangle the origin of this mysterious moon. The latest Phobos flyby campaign began today at 06:52 CET (05:52 UT), when M ... more

Opportunity Studies Chocolate Hills Rock
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 12, 2010
Opportunity is exploring around the rim of the very young crater "Concepcion." On Sol 2145 (Feb. 4, 2010), the rover made a 10-meter (33-foot) approach to a rock target called "Chocolate Hills." This rock target is of interest because it exhibits a dark rind or crust that may be impact melt. On Sol 2147 (Feb. 6, 2010), Opportunity completed a 2-meter (7-foot) short approach to bring the target within the work volume of the robotic arm (IDD). On Sol 2149 (Feb. 8, 2010), the rover performed a ... read more
