Mars Express Heading For Closest Flyby Of Phobos
Paris, France (ESA) Mar 02, 2010
ESA's Mars Express will skim the surface of Mars' largest moon Phobos on Wednesday evening. Passing by at an altitude of 67 km, precise radio tracking will allow researchers to peer inside the mysterious moon. Mars Express is currently engaged in a series of 12 flybys of Phobos. At each close pass, different instruments are trained towards the mysterious space rock, gaining new information. The closest flyby will take place on 3 March at 21:55 CET (20:55 GMT). From close range, Mars Express ... read more

Phobos Flyby Season Starts Again
Paris, France (ESA) Feb 17, 2010
Today Mars Express began a series of flybys of Phobos, the largest moon of Mars. The campaign will reach its crescendo on 3 March, when the spacecraft will set a new record for the closest pass to Phobos, skimming the surface at just 50 km. The data collected could help untangle the origin of this mysterious moon. The latest Phobos flyby campaign began today at 06:52 CET (05:52 UT), when M ... more

A History Of Changes In A Mars Crater
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 17, 2010
Near the center of a Martian crater about the size of Connecticut, hundreds of exposed rock layers form a mound as tall as the Rockies and reveal a record of major environmental changes on Mars billions of years ago. The history told by this tall parfait of layers inside Gale Crater matches what has been proposed in recent years as the dominant planet-wide pattern for early Mars, according ... more

Voyager Celebrates 20-Year-Old Valentine To Solar System
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 16, 2010
Twenty years ago on February 14, NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft had sailed beyond the outermost planet in our solar system and turned its camera inward to snap a series of final images that would be its parting valentine to the string of planets it called home. Mercury was too close to the sun to see, Mars showed only a thin crescent of sunlight, and Pluto was too dim, but Voyager was able to ... more

Spirit Ready For Another Cold Martian Winter
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 12, 2010
Spirit is now parked for the winter in the embedded area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. The last winter-preparatory movement of the rover was commanded on Sol 2169 (Feb. 8, 2010). The rover was commanded to flatten the suspension system on the right side and accentuate the suspension wheelie on the left side, all to enhance northerly tilt. Very little change in tilt was achieved. At this point, the project is now adjusting various rover parameters and positioning the robotic ... read more
