Scientist eyes 39-day voyage to Mars
Washington (AFP) Feb 26, 2010
A journey from Earth to Mars could in the future take just 39 days - cutting current travel time nearly six times - according to a rocket scientist who has the ear of the US space agency. Franklin Chang-Diaz, a former astronaut and a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), says reaching the Red Planet could be dramatically quicker using his high-tech VASIMR rocket, now on track for liftoff after decades of development. The Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket -- ... read more

Layers Piled In A Mars Crater Record A History Of Changes
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 12, 2010
Near the center of a Martian crater about the size of Connecticut, hundreds of exposed rock layers form a mound as tall as the Rockies and reveal a record of major environmental changes on Mars billions of years ago. The history told by this tall parfait of layers inside Gale Crater matches what has been proposed in recent years as the dominant planet-wide pattern for early Mars, according ... more

Spirit Ready For Another Cold Martian Winter
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 12, 2010
Spirit is now parked for the winter in the embedded area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. The last winter-preparatory movement of the rover was commanded on Sol 2169 (Feb. 8, 2010). The rover was commanded to flatten the suspension system on the right side and accentuate the suspension wheelie on the left side, all to enhance northerly tilt. Very little change in tilt was achi ... more

Spirit Prepares for Winter
Pasadena CA (SPX) Feb 04, 2010
Sol 2151-2158 : Spirit is still embedded in the area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. Energy levels for Spirit have been decreasing rapidly as winter approaches. To prepare for winter, the project is taking actions to improve northerly tilt of the rover to maximize solar illumination. The best approach has been to drive Spirit backwards. The drives employ a wheel steering acti ... more

A Stationary Spirit
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
Spirit is staying put. NASA has designated the once-roving scientific explorer a "stationary science platform" after months of unsuccessful attempts to free it from a sand trap. The rover's task in the next few weeks will be to shift itself into a more favorable position. The solar panels are now tilted 9 degrees to the south. An even tilt or a tilt to the north is needed to power the solar panels during the severe Martian winter, since during this time the Sun stays in the northern sky. At ... read more
