UCF Professor Working On One-of-a-Kind Asteroid Space Mission Tallahassee FL (SPX) Feb 18, 2010 University of Central Florida asteroid expert Humberto Campins has been selected to help prepare a one-of-a-kind mission. The mission is unique because it aims to bring back to Earth a sample of a primitive, organic-rich asteroid that is not found in any meteorite collection. This asteroid formed somewhere between Mars and Jupiter; however, its current orbit brings it relatively close to Earth (sometimes almost as close as our moon). This proximity to Earth makes it more accessible for a spacecraf ... read more |

Spirit Ready For Another Cold Martian Winter Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 12, 2010 Spirit is now parked for the winter in the embedded area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. The last winter-preparatory movement of the rover was commanded on Sol 2169 (Feb. 8, 2010). The rover was commanded to flatten the suspension system on the right side and accentuate the suspension wheelie on the left side, all to enhance northerly tilt. Very little change in tilt was achi ... more Spirit Prepares for Winter Pasadena CA (SPX) Feb 04, 2010 Sol 2151-2158 : Spirit is still embedded in the area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. Energy levels for Spirit have been decreasing rapidly as winter approaches. To prepare for winter, the project is taking actions to improve northerly tilt of the rover to maximize solar illumination. The best approach has been to drive Spirit backwards. The drives employ a wheel steering acti ... more Craters Young And Old In Sirenum Fossae Bonn, Germany (SPX) Feb 04, 2010 The High Resolution Stereo Camera, operated by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) on board the Mars Express orbiter has imaged craters, both young and old, in this view of the Southern Highlands of Mars. Mars Pairs Up With Full Moon Washington DC (SPX) Jan 28, 2010 One of the skywatching highlights of the year takes place on the night of January 29, as the full Moon and the planet Mars march high across the sky, according to the editors of StarDate magazine. Mars and the Moon are low in the east-northeast at nightfall, with the Red Planet to the left of the Moon. Mars looks like a brilliant orange star. One reason this is such a grand spectacle is that Mars is at opposition on the 29th, which means it lines up opposite the Sun as Earth passes by Mars in our ... read more |
