Spirit Parks For The Winter
Pasadena CA (JPL) Feb 17, 2010
Spirit is now parked for the winter in the embedded area called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. The last winter-preparatory movement of the rover was commanded on Sol 2169 (Feb. 8, 2010). The rover was commanded to flatten the suspension system on the right side and accentuate the suspension wheelie on the left side, all to enhance northerly tilt. Very little change in tilt was achieved. At this point, the project is now adjusting various rover parameters and positioning t ... read more

A Stationary Spirit
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
Spirit is staying put. NASA has designated the once-roving scientific explorer a "stationary science platform" after months of unsuccessful attempts to free it from a sand trap. The rover's task in the next few weeks will be to shift itself into a more favorable position. The solar panels are now tilted 9 degrees to the south. An even tilt or a tilt to the north is needed to power the sola ... more

Mars Pairs Up With Full Moon
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 28, 2010
One of the skywatching highlights of the year takes place on the night of January 29, as the full Moon and the planet Mars march high across the sky, according to the editors of StarDate magazine. Spirit rover to remain stuck in Martian sand
Washington (AFP) Jan 26, 2010
NASA admitted defeat Tuesday saying efforts to free the Spirit rover bogged down by Martian sand were over and instead the plucky robot was hunkering down to brave the harsh Mars winter. "Spirit is not dead; it has just entered another phase of its long life," said Doug McCuistion, director of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA headquarters in Washington. "It looks like Spirit's current location on Mars will be its final resting place." Earlier this month NASA celebrated Spirit's bountiful ... read more
