That Sinking Feeling Ebbs Away At Spirit Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 15, 2010 Spirit remains embedded at the location called "Troy" on the West side of Home Plate. Extrication drives were tried on sols 2138, 2140 and 2142 (Jan. 7, 9 and 11, 2010). Each of these drives employed a new technique of steering the wheels back and forth before driving. This has shown some efficacy at sweeping material out of the wheel tracks and allowing fresh material to slough off the leading trench face providing traction under the wheel. Slower wheel speeds were also tried on two of the drives. However, even with these new techniques, little forward progress has been achieved. And excessive sinkage continues to occur with each attempt. ... read more |

Martian Landform Observations Fill Special Journal Issue Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 12, 2010 Martian landforms shaped by winds, water, lava flow, seasonal icing and other forces are analyzed in 21 journal reports based on data from a camera orbiting Mars. The research in a January special issue of Icarus testifies to the diversity of the planet being examined by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Examples of the ... more NASA To Check For Unlikely Winter Survival Of Mars Lander Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 12, 2010 Beginning Jan. 18, NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter will listen for possible, though improbable, radio transmissions from the Phoenix Mars Lander, which completed five months of studying an arctic Martian site in November 2008. The solar-powered lander operated two months longer than its three-month prime mission during summer on northern Mars before the seasonal ebb of sunshine ended its work. ... more Australian Lakes May Hold Clues to Life on Mars Rolla MO (SPX) Jan 12, 2010 By the time Curiosity, the next Mars Rover, launches in 2011, scientists on Earth will know more about the potential for life on Mars because of microorganisms that live in Australian lakes. Microbiologists like Dr. Melanie Mormile from Missouri University of Science and Technology are studying organisms found in the salt-water lakes of western Australia that have an acidic pH because the ... more |

Opportunity Examinines 'Marquette Island's' Interior Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 08, 2010 Opportunity has been investigating the rock known as "Marquette Island". The rock abrasion tool (RAT) was used to grind a 1.5 millimeters (0.06 inch) into this very hard rock for further investigation by the other rover instruments. On Sol 2110 (Dec. 24, 2009), the RAT itself was imaged to determine the amount of remaining grind bit. Then, a microscopic imager (MI) mosaic was performed on ... more Earth-Like Planet Probably A Wasteland Washington DC (SPX) Jan 06, 2010 When scientists confirmed in October that they had detected the first rocky planet outside our solar system, it advanced the longtime quest to find an Earth-like planet hospitable to life. Rocky planets - Earth, Mercury, Venus and Mars - make up half the planets in our solar system. Rocky planets are considered better environments to support life than planets that are mainly gaseous, like ... more Goddard Scientist Breakthrough Given Ticket To Mars Greenbelt MD (SPX) Jan 06, 2010 The quest to discover whether Mars ever hosted an environment friendly to microscopic forms of life has just gotten a shot in the arm. "Mars was a lot different 3-1/2 billion years ago. It was more like Earth with liquid water," said Jennifer Eigenbrode, a scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Maybe life existed back then. Maybe it has persisted, which is possible ... more |
