Mars Spirit Rover Facing End Of Mission Decision Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 04, 2010 NASA's Mars rover Spirit will mark six years of unprecedented science exploration and inspiration for the American public on Sunday. However, the upcoming Martian winter could end the roving career of the beloved, scrappy robot. Spirit successfully landed on the Red Planet at 8:35 p.m. PST on Jan. 3, 2004, and its twin Opportunity arrived at 9:05 p.m. Jan. 24, 2004. The rovers began missions intended to last for three months but which have lasted six Earth years, or 3.2 Mars years. During this time, Spirit has found evidence of a steamy and violent environment on ancient Mars that was quite different from the wet and acidic past documented by Opportunity - halfway around the planet. ... read more |

Spirit Broken Wheel Spins Again After Three Years Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 18, 2009 Spirit's right-front wheel, which had stopped operating in March 2006, revolved with apparently normal motion during the first three of four driving segments on Sol 2117 but stopped early in the fourth segment of the drive. The rover's right-rear wheel, which stalled nearly three weeks ago, remained immobile during the entire Sol 2117 drive. The other four wheels all drove forward in this part of the continuing ... more How To Find Signs Of Life On Mars Moffett Field CA (SPX) Dec 18, 2009 Certain environments on Earth that host life are very similar to places on Mars and other terrestrial planets, scientists have found. So if life can exist here, why not there? Nora Noffke is a geobiologist at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She has found evidence of microbial life all over the world - in both modern and in fossil coastal areas. Bacteria that grow on beach ... more Mars orbiter resumes science operations Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) Dec 16, 2009 NASA says its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's six science instruments resumed operations Wednesday after being suspended since an Aug. 26 computer reset. Scientists at the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif, which manages the mission, said they are now receiving new science data. "It's good to have the instruments back on," said Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter ... more |

Trough Deposits On Mars Point To Complex Hydrologic Past Tucson AZ (SPX) Dec 16, 2009 Catherine Weitz, a senior scientist at the Tucson-based Planetary Science Institute, has reported new evidence for multiple, water-related geologic processes on Mars. She and her colleagues studied light-toned deposits (LTDs) within troughs of the Noctis Labyrinthus region in western Valles Marineris using data gathered by three Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) instruments: the High ... more Martian Moon Duo Moffett Field CA (SPX) Dec 14, 2009 For the very first time, the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos have been caught on camera together. ESA's Mars Express orbiter took these pioneering images last month. Apart from their 'wow' factor, these unique images will help the HRSC team validate and refine existing orbit models of the two moons. The images were acquired with the Super Resolution Channel (SRC) of the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). ... more Opportunity Continues Investigation Of Marquette Island Pasadena CA (SPX) Dec 14, 2009 Opportunity Status for sol 2080-2090: On Sol 2086 (Dec. 6, 2009), the rover backed away and then drove about 5 meters (16 feet) around Marquette Island to image other parts of the rock. On Sol 2089 (Dec. 9, 2009), Opportunity performed a 5-meter (16-foot) approach to the rock to position the rover for an in-situ (contact) study of a different part of the rock than it had touched earlier. ... more |
