Martian Moon Duo Moffett Field CA (SPX) Dec 14, 2009 For the very first time, the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos have been caught on camera together. ESA's Mars Express orbiter took these pioneering images last month. Apart from their 'wow' factor, these unique images will help the HRSC team validate and refine existing orbit models of the two moons. The images were acquired with the Super Resolution Channel (SRC) of the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). The camera took 130 images of the moons on 5 November at 9:14 CET over period of 1.5 minutes at intervals of 1s, speeding up to 0.5-s intervals toward the end. ... read more |

Mars Orbiter taken out of 'safe mode' Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) Dec 9, 2009 NASA technicians say they have taken the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter out of the precautionary "safe mode" it has been in since August. That procedure was the latest step in a series of commands designed to allow the orbiter to resume science operations next week, NASA said. "The patient is out of danger but more steps have to be taken to get it back on its feet," said Mars ... more Spirit remains trapped in Martian sand Pasadena, Calif. (UPI) Dec 8, 2009 NASA engineers attempting to free the Mars rover Spirit from loose Martian sand since April say the results of their attempts so far are not encouraging. A series of diagnostic tests conducted on Spirit's right-rear wheel last week were designed to investigate stalls that occurred Nov. 28 and earlier. Those diagnostics, the space agency said, included rotor-resistance tests at three ... more Opportunity Investigates 'Marquette' And 'Islington Bay' Pasadena CA (SPX) Dec 08, 2009 Opportunity Status for sol 2076-2079: Opportunity has been investigating the rock known as "Marquette Island." On Sol 2076 (Nov. 25, 2009), the robotic arm (IDD) placed the Moessbauer (MB) spectrometer on a rock target called "Islington Bay" for a long, multi-sol integration. With the temporary loss of relay operations for a few sols because of the Odyssey spacecraft safe-mode, Opportunity ... more |

Mars Meteorite Debate Continues Houston TX (SPX) Dec 03, 2009 Using more advanced analytical instruments now available, a Johnson Space Center research team has reexamined the 1996 finding that a meteorite contains strong evidence that life may have existed on ancient Mars. The new research focused on investigating alternate proposals for the creation of materials thought to be signs of ancient life found in the meteorite. The new study argues that ... more Orbiter Puts Itself Into Safe Standby Pasadena CA (SPX) Dec 03, 2009 NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter put itself into a safe standby mode on Saturday, Nov. 28, and the team operating the spacecraft has begun implementing careful steps designed to resume Odyssey's science and relay operations within about a week. Engineers have diagnosed the cause of the Nov. 28 event as the spacecraft's proper response to a memory error with a known source. The likely cause is a ... more Opportunity Continues Study Of 'Marquette' Pasadena CA (SPX) Dec 01, 2009 Opportunity has been investigating the rock known as "Marquette Island" over the last couple of weeks. This target is proving to be something unique that Opportunity has not encountered in more than 2000 Sols of exploring Mars. The science team is theorizing this rock could be either be a type of meteorite that Opportunity has never seen before or it could be ejecta from deep within the ... more |
