Gullies And Flow Features On Crater Wall
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 26, 2009
This image from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows a sample of the variety and complexity of processes that may occur on the walls of Martian craters, well after the impact crater formed. At the very top of the image is the high crater rim. At the bottom of the image is the crater's central peak, a dome of material ... read more

No Wheel Stall In Diagnostic Drive
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 26, 2009
On Sol 2095 (Tuesday, Nov. 24), Spirit performed a set of diagnostic actions related to a stall of the right-rear wheel on the previous drive, three days earlier. The diagnostics showed a fully functioning wheel free of obstruction. The rover was commanded forward with 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of wheel spin. The rover moved 2.1 millimeters (0.08 inch) forward, 1.1 millimeters (0.04 inch) to ... more

Team Plans Uplink Of Protective Files To MRO
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 26, 2009
The team operating NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter plans to uplink protective files to the spacecraft next week as one step toward resuming the orbiter's research and relay activities. Since the orbiter spontaneously rebooted its computer on Aug. 26, flight team engineers have been examining possible root causes and repercussions of that incident and three similar events this year on ... more

Mars valleys point to rainy red planet
    Washington (AFP) Nov 23, 2009
A network of valleys discovered on Mars show that the red planet was likely once covered by a vast ocean that fed a humid, rainy climate, according to research published Monday. Debate has raged for decades over whether Martian valleys resulted from water erosion - caused by humidity and rainfall - or through groundwater-sapping erosion, which can happen in cold and dry conditions. ... more

Third Spirit Extrication Drive Ends With Wheel Stall
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 24, 2009
Spirit experienced a wheel stall with the right-rear wheel during the second step of a two-step drive on Sol 2092 (Saturday, Nov. 21). This is not the same wheel that stalled on Sol 1899 (May 6), the left-middle wheel. On Sol 2092, the right-rear wheel did not experience a hard stall like what was seen on Sol 1899. Instead, it stalled because the wheel's progress fell behind the ... more

    Can Spirit Be Freed
Huntsville AL (SPX) Nov 16, 2009
On Monday, NASA will begin transmitting commands to its Mars exploration rover Spirit as part of an escape plan to free the venerable robot from its Martian sand trap. "This is going to be a lengthy process, and there's a high probability attempts to free Spirit will not be successful," cautions Doug McCuistion, director of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. ... more

Dawn Enters Asteroid Belt - For Good
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 16, 2009
NASA's Dawn spacecraft re-entered our solar system's asteroid belt on Nov. 13, and this time it will stay there. Dawn first entered the belt (whose lower boundary may be defined as the greatest distance Mars gets from the sun (249,230,000 kilometers, or 154,864,000 miles) in June 2008. It remained within the belt for 40 days before its carefully planned orbital path brought it below the as ... more

Professor To Predict Weather On Mars
College Station TX (SPX) Nov 05, 2009
Is there such a thing as "weather" on Mars? There are some doubts, considering the planet's atmosphere is only 1 percent as dense as that of the Earth. Mars, however, definitely has clouds, drastically low temperatures and out-of-this-world dust storms, and Istvan Szunyogh, a Texas A and M professor of atmospheric sciences, has been awarded a NASA grant to analyze and forecast Martian weather. ... more
