Distal Rampart Of Crater In Chryse Planitia
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 18, 2009
Impact craters on Mars are kind of neat. Many of them look very different than impact craters seen on Earth's moon or Mercury. Fresh lunar and Mercurian craters have ejecta blankets that look a bit rough near the crater rims; around larger craters, long rays or chains of secondary craters radiate away from the crater rims. Some Martian craters are similar to these craters, but Mars also ... read more

Team Prepares To Uplink Commands To Spirit
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 18, 2009
Driving commands are being prepared to instruct Spirit to attempt to drive forward. These are the first driving commands since Spirit became embedded in a Martian sandtrap approximately six months ago. These commands will be transmitted to Spirit at 1 a.m. PST (4 a.m. EST) Tuesday, Nov. 17. The rover will be instructed to drive straight ahead (north) in two steps. Each step will be a ... more

    Opportunity Approaching "Marquette Island"
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 17, 2009
Opportunity is still heading south before the turn east to head toward Endeavour Crater. The right front wheel is exhibiting elevated motor currents. So, the plan is to find a place to stop and rest the actuator while conducting some some contact science. On Sol 2058 (Nov. 7, 2009), the rover began a 15-meter (49-foot) approach to a candidate rock target called "Marquette Island." On ... more

Spirit's Flash Memory In Use Again
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 18, 2009
Spirit is preparing to attempt extrication from her embedded location at "Troy" on the west side of "Home Plate." The project was successful in reformatting Spirit's on-board flash memory file system on Sol 2083 (Nov. 11, 2009). The rover is now again using the non-volatile flash file system for telemetry storage. On Sol 2078 (Nov. 6, 2009), Spirit straightened her wheels ... more

Taking A Bite Of Antarctic Ice
Moffet Field CA (SPX) Nov 17, 2009
Scientists with NASA's IceBite project are heading this week for University Valley, a hanging valley perched more than 1600 feet (more than 1 mile) above sea level in Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys. Their objective: to test a set of ice-penetrating drills and select one for use on a future mission to the martian polar north, the same region of the planet that NASA's Phoenix lander ... more

    Opportunity's Right-Front Wheel Recovering
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 10, 2009
Opportunity continues to make good progress driving. The rover continued to drive south on sols 2050, 2051, 2054, 2055 and 2056, (Oct. 30, 31, Nov. 3, 4 and 5, 2009) totaling over 260 meters (853 feet). The right-front wheel is now showing a return of elevated motor currents. The plan ahead is to rest the actuator during an extended stop for an in-situ (contact) science campaign. ... more

Frost-Covered Phoenix Lander Seen In Winter Images
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 09, 2009
Winter images of NASA's Phoenix Lander showing the lander shrouded in dry-ice frost on Mars have been captured with the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE camera, aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The HiRISE camera team at the University of Arizona, Tucson, captured one image of the Phoenix lander on July 30, 2009, and the other on Aug. 22, 2009. That's when the ... more

Professor To Predict Weather On Mars
College Station TX (SPX) Nov 05, 2009
Is there such a thing as "weather" on Mars? There are some doubts, considering the planet's atmosphere is only 1 percent as dense as that of the Earth. Mars, however, definitely has clouds, drastically low temperatures and out-of-this-world dust storms, and Istvan Szunyogh, a Texas A and M professor of atmospheric sciences, has been awarded a NASA grant to analyze and forecast Martian weather. ... more
