A Tale Of Planetary Woe
Huntsville AL (SPX) Nov 09, 2009
Once upon a time - roughly four billion years ago - Mars was warm and wet, much like Earth. Liquid water flowed on the Martian surface in long rivers that emptied into shallow seas. A thick atmosphere blanketed the planet and kept it warm. Living microbes might have even arisen, some scientists believe, starting Mars down the path toward becoming a second life-filled planet next door to our own. ... read more

Rock Formation On Mars A Reminder Of The Collapse Of The Berlin Wall
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Nov 10, 2009
The Berlin Wall fell 20 years ago. From 1961 to 1989, this concrete wall, many miles in length, divided not only a city but also the whole of Germany. A shattered rock formation on Mars is a reminder of the event that changed the world on 9 November 1989. 'Broken Wall' was the name given in 1997 by Berlin scientists at the German Aerospace Center ... more

    Spirit Dealing With Flash Access
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 10, 2009
Spirit is still suffering from the inability to access the on-board, non-volatile (flash) memory file system. However, the operations team has developed a strategy to allow science activities to continue. To ensure that science data collected by Spirit is returned to Earth, the team has been keeping Spirit awake each sol from the morning communication session through the data relay via the ... more

    Opportunity's Right-Front Wheel Recovering
Pasadena CA (SPX) Nov 10, 2009
Opportunity continues to make good progress driving. The rover continued to drive south on sols 2050, 2051, 2054, 2055 and 2056, (Oct. 30, 31, Nov. 3, 4 and 5, 2009) totaling over 260 meters (853 feet). The right-front wheel is now showing a return of elevated motor currents. The plan ahead is to rest the actuator during an extended stop for an in-situ (contact) science campaign. ... more

DLR Simulates Mars' Atmosphere In Gottingen
Gottingen, Germany (SPX) Oct 28, 2009
Is the Earth the only place in our Solar System on which living organisms exist? Is there, for example, life on Mars? The goal of the European space mission ExoMars is to resolve this question. To this end, the atmosphere on Mars is being simulated at the German Aerospace Center in Gottingen. The researchers in Gottingen are examining the impact the exotic ... more

Establish One Or More Self-Sustaining, Permanent Space Colonies
Bethesda MD (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
In response to a Launchspace request for comments, we have a guest commentary by Phil Henderson, Space Systems Engineer, Palm Bay, Florida: Exploration of Mars is a worthy goal, but it should not be the only goal. In fact, it alone could become like Kennedy's original moon goal and once completed, it becomes "been there, done that". A more worthy goal might be: To establish one or more ... more
