China Works For Mars And Moon Missions
Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Oct 20, 2009
The launch of a Russian Phobos Grunt probe to Mars on October 16 has been delayed until 2011. The delay also affects China's first mission to Mars. The 240-pound Chinese Yinghou-1 spacecraft was to be mounted atop the Russian spacecraft for transport to the Martian orbit, where it was to be released before the Russian spacecraft landed on Phobos. The delay, however, gives us grounds to ... read more

Spirit Still In X-Band Fault Mode
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 20, 2009
Spirit is still in X-band fault mode due to a high-gain antenna (HGA) dynamic brake anomaly that first occurred back on Sol 2027 (Sept. 15, 2009) and has re-occurred most recently on Sol 2052 (Oct. 11, 2009). With the HGA fault, all X-band uplinks use the low-gain antenna (LGA) and uplink bandwidth is limited. Spirit was to be back under normal HGA operation on Sol 2054 (Oct. 13, 2009). ... more

New Concept May Enhance Earth-Mars Communication
Paris, France (ESA) Oct 19, 2009
Direct communication between Earth and Mars can be strongly disturbed and even blocked by the Sun for weeks at a time, cutting off any future human mission to the Red Planet. An ESA engineer working with engineers in the UK may have found a solution using a new type of orbit combined with continuous-thrust ion propulsion. The European researchers studied a possible solution to a crucial ... more

    Opportunity Finished With 'Shelter Island'
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 19, 2009
Opportunity completed its survey of the meteorite called "Shelter Island". On Sol 2029 (Oct. 8, 2009), the rover completed the in-situ (contact) science campaign on the meteorite's surface with a microscopic imager (MI) mosaic and an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer (APXS) placement for integration. On Sol 2031 (Oct. 10, 2009), the robotic arm (instrument deployment device, or IDD) was ... more

    Migrating Microbes
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 16, 2009
In the ongoing quest for extraterrestrial life, imagine the day scientists discover life on another planet. Then imagine finding out that those life forms actually originated on Earth. With every spacecraft that leaves Earth, millions of microbes try to hitch a ride into outer space. NASA hopes to launch a Mars Sample Return Mission in the future, and preventing cross-contamination of Mars ... more

    China's First Mars Mission Delayed
Beijing, China (XNA) Oct 02, 2009
China's first Mars probe mission will be delayed because of Russia's decision to postpone the launch of its mission to the Martian moon Phobos from next month to the year 2011. Russia's Phobos-Grunt mission had been slated to lift off aboard a Zenith rocket in October on a three-year mission to study Phobos and return soil samples to Earth. Yinghuo-1 orbiter was set to be launched with the ... more

    Seeking Life's Shadow
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 02, 2009
They haven't yet figured out how to draw blood from stones, but a group of French researchers is offering new insight that could change how scientists search for signs of life in Martian rocks. By studying the laboratory fossilization of microorganisms, scientists have caught a glimpse into how early Earth and potential Martian life might be preserved in rocks. The scientists focused on ... more

Radial Channels Carved By Dry Ice
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 01, 2009
Spider-shaped features in the south polar region of Mars are carved by vaporizing dry ice in a dynamic seasonal process. This image from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter includes several of the distinctive features in an area 1.2 kilometers (three-fourths of a mile) wide. It is one of the HiRISE camera team's featured ... more
